"You're not going to get into my head, Syndi," said Marshall, flinging a dozen glossy squares of waxed card at his older sister's head. "It won't work, so you can just stop trying."

"Sure it won't," said Syndi, leaning over the edge of the sofa to scoop up the dropped Polaroids. "It's definitely not getting to you right now as I'm sitting here."

"I hate you," said Marshall, turning on his heel and storming out of the living room. Simon, who had been closing the Teller's front door behind him when the exchange took place, hovered awkwardly on the welcome mat as his best friend stomped back upstairs.

Syndi lay back amidst the overstuffed couch cushions, laughing softly to herself. A loud hollow boom echoed through the quiet house as Marshall slammed his bedroom door behind him and she pressed a throw pillow to her face, her shoulders shaking and her feet kicking in a paroxysm of mirth.

"Sorry, Simon," she gasped when she eventually recovered. Her face was flushed and her eyes were wet, and she fanned herself with the handful of photographs as she levered herself into a sitting position. "Come on in. But maybe give Mars a few minutes to calm down before you head up there."

"What did you do?" asked Simon, settling beside her on the long white four-seater and reaching for a plate of brownies on a nearby end-table.

Syndi handed over the small stack of cards, her expression radiating the kind of joyful malevolence Simon usually associated with fae queens on a rampage. He laid the photographs out face down on the smoked glass coffee table, took a deep breath, and flipped over the first one.

"Oh no," he said. "Syndi! You stole his Lawrence Taylor action figure?"

"Borrowed," she corrected. "Borrowed pending suitable payment."

"Kidnapped and held to ransom," said Simon. He held up one picture, a shot of tiny plastic Lawrence Taylor gazing moodily out over a grey-tinged Lake Eerie. Beside him was a scrawled note reading 'save me'.

"Yeah, but I haven't settled on a price yet," said Syndi. "So far he's offered me one dollar thirty-two cents, a lanyard from some local nerd party called CornCon, a can of tomato soup, and his only non-clip on tie."

"You let Melanie Monroe play with him?" asked Simon in horror, staring at another snapshot.

Syndi let out a burst of laughter.

"I forgot about one!" she said, plucking the picture of a grinning Melanie dangling Lawrence Taylor above the ghost-shark tank at the Eerie Aquarium. "First time he saw it, I almost got him to give me all the buttons off his coat. We were in the park, though, and he chickened out at the last minute."

"Forgot about it?" asked Simon, riffling through the rest of the images. "How long has this been going on?"

"About three weeks," said Syndi.

Simon looked at her.

"That action figure was on top of your fridge yesterday morning," he said.

"Yep," said Syndi. "He's been there, tucked between the cling-film and the leftover Kornade Kwenchy Kups from last Halloween, this whole time. Marshall looks right at him every time he goes to get a snack and he's so busy being mad about the pictures that he's never even noticed."

"You're a little bit evil underneath it all, huh?" said Simon.

Syndi grinned.
