Eerie, Indiana drabble and a half: Poetry Slam

The spotlights bleached the colour out of Janet’s hair, turning the brilliant reds into a mass of chlorinated greens shot through with shadow. Sweat beaded on her upper lip and she licked it away, tasting salt and the acrid tang of fear. Beyond the stage, the audience sat in darkness, row upon row of empty, featureless faces. Here and there, silver flashed as mirrored shades reflected the dim glow of the exit signs.

She gripped the microphone stand, her hands slippery, her pulse jumping. It was hot, here in the white glare of the public eye. She cleared her throat.

“My name is Janet Donner,” she said, her voice coming high and clear through the wall mounted speakers of the drafty, run-down theatre. “And tonight I’d like to read a poem I wrote, called “Fuck You Creepy Garbage Guys, I Go Where I Want.”

Out in the black, something stirred.
