Eerie, Indiana fanfiction: Virtual Reality
The Teller's home computer covered three desks and spilled out over a good portion of the floor. Marshall and Simon slipped off their shoes and navigated coiling rivers of wire and cable in mismatched socks. Dash stood by the doorway, ostensibly keeping an eye out in case Marshall's parents returned unexpectedly and caught them sneaking into Edgar's cramped and over-crowded study. In reality, he was hoping Teller would catch his foot on one of the many tangled leads and take a header into the bank of filing cabinets standing sentinel against the far wall.
"This is it," said Marshall. "Things Incorporated's newest invention - virtual reality computer games."
Simon picked up a heavy black helmet covered in flashing diodes and small intricate dials that connected to nothing at all and appeared to have been added for aesthetic effect.
"This is very cool," he said.
"You want to try it out?" asked Marshall, in a tone which indicated that he very much wanted to try it out. Simon nodded eagerly, hopping from foot to foot as Marshall moved a sheaf of computer printouts from a nearby chair to the windowsill.
"Take a seat," he said grandly, and Simon hopped up, his grin wide, the VR helmet cradled in his lap.
Atop the nearest monitor, a bright green digital read-out flashed steadily, twelve o'clock, on and off. Dash spotted it and rolled his eyes.
"Dash, give me a hand," said Marshall, disappearing beneath one of the tables and dragging an overloaded extender socket with him. "There's a tower with a CD loader by the door - take the red cable from the helmet and plug it in to the hole in the back, then pass me the yellow lead so I can plug it in here."
Dash thought about refusing, just to be difficult, but the truth was he was kind of curious himself. He did as he was told, although he did jerk the yellow co-axial out of Teller's hands a couple of times, pretending it was an accident.
Finally Marshall emerged from beneath the computer desk, dust bunnies in his hair and little pieces of solder caught in the fabric of his shirt.
"Okay," he said. "Simon, you ready?"
"I was born for this," said Simon, slipping the black-visored helmet on so that it completely covered his face.
Marshall knelt beside a CPU the size of a mid-range chest freezer and pressed the power button. There came a low electronic whine and the clatter of a CD-ROM spinning into life. The four screens perched on the cluttered desktops lit up, the monitors displaying green pixelated images on a black background.
Marshall, who had been grinning with anticipation, suddenly went very pale.
"Get it off him," he said, reaching for the waist-height plug sockets and wrenching them out with no regard for the laminated poster demonstrating proper shut-down procedure taped to the wall above the computer. "Dash, get that helmet off him now."
"What's wrong?" asked Simon, blinking in the late afternoon sunlight as the VR headset was none too gently yanked off his head.
Marshall picked up the discarded jewel case that lay beside the keyboard. His hands were shaking, though he managed to keep his voice steady.
"It was already loaded," he said, holding out the box so they could inspect the cover art.
"What's the Oregon Trail?" asked Dash.
Simon flinched backwards, so hard he almost toppled out of his seat.
"Guys, this is really bad," said Marshall. "I think my dad's company is planning to kill people off using virtual reality dysentery."
The three of them absorbed this in silence for a moment.
"Shit," said Dash.
"Literally," said Marshall.
