Syndi Teller, Marshall Teller, and Simon Holmes are agents, trained to fight The Problem: the dead who walk the earth as ghostly visitors. They run their own small agency - Trusted Associates Inc - out of the Teller house in Eerie, Indiana - a town where the Problem has proven to be even stranger than it is elsewhere. Between the cases they take, Trusted Associates spends time researching the Problem and trying to understand its cause, as well as why it is so different in Eerie - in particular, why Syndi Teller, who should be too old to see the spirits they fight, has maintained her talent.

One day, a family comes to hire Trusted Associates because their daughter, Melanie Monroe, is being haunted by the boy who's heart saved her life. Marshall is excited to take this case, hoping it will lead to a better understanding of the Problem. What they find during their operation, however, is a very different haunting than any they've ever seen before. And then Melanie and her ghost, Devon Wilde, offer to take them to a place where they can find answers to all of their questions about the Problem and Eerie.

And, despite his sister's misgivings, Marshall knows it's too good a chance to pass up.
