Eerie, Indiana fanfiction: Surprise

31_days challenge. The prompt was, "Wrap your head around"
"Mars!" Simon flung open the door to Marshall's bedroom. "You gotta come quick, you won't believe- oh. Oh God! Oh, sorry!" He backed out, fumbling the door closed behind him and ran down the stairs. Marilyn and Edgar watched him go from their vantage point on the living room sofa.
"Bye, Simon!" Marilyn called to his retreating back. A fading "Bye, Mrs. Teller!" drifted back across the lawn.
A few minutes later, they heard Marshall's door open and footsteps on the upstairs landing.
"Is he gone?" Mars called down.
"Yes," his parents chorused back.
Mars walked carefully down the stairs, balancing a box more than half his size, inexpertly wrapped in bright paper and trailing coils of ribbons that were already coming unfastened.
"You were supposed to keep him out 'til I was done," he said, his tone accusing. "Now it won't be a surprise anymore."
Edgar rose from the sofa and reached out to secure a corner of the wrapping paper that was peeling away from the parcel, pressing it back into place.
"I doubt he'll mind," he said.
"Well, I mind," said Marshall, his face taking on a mulish expression.
"Oh sweetheart," said his mother, looking up at her only begotten son. "I know this is a difficult concept for you to grasp, but Simon's birthday is not actually about you."
