As it turns out, there are quite a few films and TV shows set in Indiana. Here are just a few that deal with with the paranormal. 🛸👽🧛‍♀️🧟‍♂️ Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) This film shows Lincoln at his boyhood home in Spencer County, Indiana.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) UFOs wreak havoc over Indiana airspace. In Stephen King's Sleepwalkers (1992), a mother and son pair of shapeshifting vampires relocates to a rural Indiana town to avoid suspicion.

Strange things happen in the aptly named Eerie, Indiana (1991-1993). In Hawkins, Indiana even Stranger Things occur when government laboratories unleash something from another dimension.

Super-Ambitious Failed '90s Shows That Were Light Years Ahead Of Their Time

The '90s weren’t just flannel shirts, boy bands, and Seinfeld. Some of the most daring shows in television history premiered during this decade, and although they were short-lived, make no mistake: They were years ahead of their time.

From dystopian sci-fi to serious cartoons to hyper-realistic depictions of the teenage experience, the '90s were actually a pretty great time for TV. This list aims to rank and revisit some of the most underrated '90s shows, both campy and high-quality, that still deserve our attention.

3: Eerie Indiana

Marshall Teller (Omri Katz, who also played Max in Hocus Pocus) moves to a Midwestern town that just so happens to be "the center of weirdness for the entire planet.” Aided by his best friend Simon (Justin Shenkarow), the two investigate the supernatural mysteries that frequently occur around town.

Air Dates: September 15, 1991 - April 12, 1992 (19 episodes)

Why It Didn't Catch On: The sci-fi/horror craze just hadn't caught on yet. Audiences weren't ready for a primetime show about a town that had its own werewolf, creepy Tupperware that keeps things fresh forever, and zombies who wore pajamas. (Even cult classic Twin Peaks, which debuted in 1990, was canceled after two seasons.) Plus, a few of the characters were children who came from broken homes, and adults were the bad guys. Had the show aired just a few years later, when we reached Buffy and X-Files territory, Eerie, Indiana, might have gotten a few more seasons. The show did gain enough popularity for a 1998 spin-off series (Eerie, Indiana: The Other Dimension), but that, too, only lasted a season.

Why It Could Work Today: Eerie, Indiana, walked so Stranger Things could run. They share the same basic premise: kids solving mysteries while riding around on bikes in a small town in Indiana that just so happens to be a hot bed for strange activity. Plus, Eerie has a Twilight Zone-like quality, with each episode being its own individual adventure - and The Twilight Zone just got its own reboot. There's a big market for the weird and for the unexplainable, especially in a town where everything seems normal on the surface.

DigitalSpy on Eerie Indiana

Something of a tonal precursor to Stranger Things, this early '90s series starred Hocus Pocus actor Omri Katz as Marshall Teller, a teenager whose family moves to desolate Eerie, Indiana (population: 16,661).

Tongue-in-cheek but still terrifying, the show saw Marshall and best pal Simon Holmes (Justin Shenkarow) embark on unnerving adventures involving werewolves, hauntings and a classmate who dies in a gruesome accident, with his spirit being transferred to a classmate via a heart transplant.

Chock full of references to scary movies from The Fly to The Wolf Man, Eerie, Indiana had a strong horror pedigree of its own, with Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) serving as a creative consultant and also directing several episodes.

Bustle on Indiana as a weirdness magnet

The new Netflix show Stranger Things is going to remind you of a plethora of supernatural films from the 1980s — and the series is perfectly fine with that. Starring Winona Ryder as Joyce, Stranger Things takes place in the town of Hawkins, Indiana (a fictional city) in 1983. The setting is an important part of the story as Joyce's son Will goes missing after coming across a mysterious beast outside of the Hawkins National Laboratory, but also because half of the fun of Stranger Things is it's throwback style, paying homage to the masters like Steven Spielberg and Stephen King.

Indiana is apparently all about the paranormal if you consider Stranger Things, Close Encounters, and the almost forgotten, but totally excellent '90s kids TV show Eerie, Indiana. The small town of Eerie isn't actually real, just like Hawkins, and it hosts plenty of urban legends and abnormal stuff. (Bonus trivia: Eerie, Indiana starred Omri Katz from Hocus Pocus !)
