Advent Calendar Challenge: Day 2

(well, now I do have 25 prompts... if I have them done by NYE, they're not late, because I said so~)

Written for froodle's prompt "not in the spirit of the season".

Simon couldn't remember the last time they'd had a Christmas tree.

Not since Harley could walk, that was for sure - the kid was the human equivelant of a hurricane, and any tree would've surely been destroyed. That was something Simon would remember, right?

He didn't remember there ever being any signs of Christmas in their house, for that matter - no tinsel, no stockings, not even a fruitcake that you accepted because it was the holidays and the nice thing to do, not because you actually intended to eat it.

So when the citizens of Eerie decked out the town in the season's finest, it didn't put Simon in the holiday spirit. It had the opposite effect, actually - it reminded him of everything he wanted that Santa Claus could never bring him.

The first December Marshall spent in Eerie, he and Simon were walking down one of the decked-out streets. Though he was from a big city and used to extravagent displays, Marshall had to admit that for a small town like Eerie, the decorations weren't half-bad, even if they were a little... bizarre (like the light-up Bigfoot inflatable in the park - seriously, what did that have to do with Christmas?

"Uh huh," was Simon's mumbled reply as he kept his gaze firmly focused on his boots crunching in the show. Marshall came to a stop where he was and gave Simon a quizzical look.

"Is something wrong?" he questioned. "Simon... don't you like Christmas?"

Simon stopped walking, too, but he didn't turn around. He wasn't sure how to answer - it wasn't like he didn't like Christmas, or at least the idea of it, but how could he explain that to someone who had all the things he was missing? Luckily, Marshall didn't press for an explanation. Instead, he walked up to Simon and clapped a hand on his shoulder.

"Hey, I think Mom & Dad said something about going to the Eerie Tree Farm later today & picking out a Christmas tree - we could use another set of eyes to make sure Dad picks out a good tree." Marshall smiled. "Are you up for the task?"

Simon slowly turned to face him, his eyes shiny and wet. "Yeah. Sounds great, Mars."
