Good news everyone! IFC just renewed its horror-comedy Stan Against Evil. What’s that? You haven’t heard of it? Well, now is your opportunity to get up on that! From the mind of show creator Dana Gould, Stan Against Evil combines everything you love of outrageous blood and guts with a no-nonsense anti-hero. The series debuted on Halloween night with an 8-episode run on the basic cable network. Despite its low ratings, the series benefited from its DVR viewership.

Just a recap for those not in the know, Stan Against Evil comes from Dana Gould, a veteran stand-up comedian who spent a good number of years as a writer and producer on The Simpsons. But Gould is also a die-hard horror fan, from classic horror movies to contemporary flicks. As evidence from his appearance on The Nerdist Podcast from 2011, Gould has an encyclopedic knowledge of all-things horror. So it was perfect for him to blend his comedic sensibilities with the genre.

In what’s best described as a mix between the cult classic Evil Dead films and the 1990’s television series Eerie, Indiana, the series took a look into the scary occurrences on a cursed small New England town known as Willard’s Mill. John C. McGinly (who perfected sarcasm and bitterness on Scrubs) stars as former sheriff Stanley Miller. He’s forced to resign after an outburst at his wife’s funeral. Did I mention that his dead wife comes back as a possessed demon?

If that’s not enough, he has to put up with his replacement, Evie Barret (Janet Varney). Not to mention his social outcast daughter Denise (Deborah Baker Jr.) who becomes a target by some of the demonic forces that haunt the town. If that’s not enough, Stan has to put up with PC culture and damn Millenials. The old-school manly man longs for a time where John Wayne was the hero. Now it’s up to him to put demons in their place.

The renewal is welcoming as the first season ended on a cliffhanger. IFC seems to have faith in the series just less than a month after the season finale aired in November. As reported by Variety, IFC is thrilled to continue the series.

“’Stan Against Evil’ instantly connected with IFC viewers, making it one of the network’s most popular original series launches to date,” said Jennifer Caserta, president of IFC. “IFC is thrilled for another season of keeping Willard’s Mill safe from demons, monsters and succubuses, and we are enormously grateful for the talented John C. McGinley and Janet Varney, along with master storyteller Dana Gould, for bringing this oddly wonderful world to life.”

In addition, Gould was quoted about his love of the characters while thanking the fans for tuning in. “I love the characters and I love the world,” Gould said. “I’m very grateful we all get to go back to Willard’s Mill and blow up more stuff.”

So if you’re in the mood for some crazy horror with a pinch of tongue-in-cheek comedy, Stan Against Evil is a delightful treat. It is unknown when the series will return for its second season. However, if you’re intrigued or if you’re a fan that wants to revisit Willard’s Mill, the series is currently available on IFC On Demand.
