It's the 14th of the month, and that's the date we put aside to think about all those amazing minor characters, places, organisations and general backdrop that make Eerie so compellingly watchable.

This month's theme is:

Happy Brothers Yoghurt

Simon gripped the top of the ladder tight with one hand, willing himself not to think about either the drop below, or the fact that if he suffered a fatal fall in the Eerie Cemetery, his parents were more likely to tell Mister Daganfort to shovel his pulpy remains into the nearest available hole and be done with it than pay for Bert and Ernie's questionable reconstruction techniques down at Happy Brothers Mortuary.

Just out of arms' reach, Snooter and Candydrops loitered atop the curling horns of a great stone gargoyle. The gargoyle did not look happy with it's situation.

The clock ticked, the minute hand moved, and eight-fifty-nine a.m came around again.

With sighs less of relief than of repletion, the ghouls who worked the night shift at Happy Brothers Mortuary peeled off bloodied gloves and spattered aprons, made one final check to ensure that the neatly hollowed-out cadavers of the previous day were neatly lined up on the rows of steel trolleys, and opened the hidden trap door that lead to the cellars, and beyond that, out to the cemetery.

Scant seconds after the door closed, hiding the tunnel from view, Bert and Ernie Wilson entered the room.

Betty Wilson stood beside the ornate and rubberised monument which bore her husband's name. She set down a bright floral-patterned Bouquet Keeper, inside of which a dozen white roses stood suspended for eternity.

She knew, standing there in her neat black veil and crisp widow's weeds, that the ground beneath her feet was empty. What had been left of Walt had not been the sort of thing she'd see sealed up and preserved forever; the thought of their precious boys finding him at the back of the icebox had sent shivers of horror up her spine.

Still, she missed him.

Sheila was already at her desk when Simon arrived, blue-white semi-translucent fingers flying over the keyboard.

"Boss!" she greeted him, then, spotting the familiar silhouette of Bert and/or Ernie in the doorway behind him, "Double boss!"

"Morning Sheila," said Simon, taking off his heavy winter jacket and exchanging it for a crisp white lab coat.

"Morning Sheila!" echoed the Wilson twins, removing matching sunshine-yellow rain-slickers to reveal identical (and, to Sheila's undead eyes, unbearably hideous) knitted sweater vests over paisley-patterned dress shirts.

"What brings you two down here?" Sheila asked, handing Simon a clipboard with the day's schedule neatly pinned to it. "I thought you were busy getting the frozen yoghurt business off the ground."

Bert - at least, Sheila assumed it was Bert, although she was basing this on her pre-death memories of Bert Reynolds and the fact that this twin had a slightly more luxuriant moustache than the other - beamed.

"Happy Brothers Yoghurt is already up and running," he said. "We hired a very capable young lady named Radford-"

"Presumably some sort of niece," his brother added. "Apparently, Radford's run in the family."

"And she's got everything under control," Bert finished.

"So we thought we'd stop by here."

The Mexican Seven Layer Dip occupied a heavy cut-glass bowl, all the better to show off the colourful strata within.

"Oh," said Bert, disappointment twisting his carefully-styled moustache. "Looks like you-"

"-missed a layer," finished Ernie, with a similarly downward cast upon his smooth-shaven upper lip.

Janet and Tod shook their heads, their movements almost, but not quite, as synchronous as those of their teachers.

"We changed some of the proportions," Janet explained. "Tod doesn't like tomato-"

"And Janet doesn't like avocado," Tod put in.

"So the left side has double guacamole-"

"And the right has double salsa."

They grinned.

"Winter berries," said Bertram Wilson, making a careful rotation of the huge, off-white confection that occupied pride of place beside a neat stack of freshly-washed kitchen utensils. "That's a bold choice in the middle of August."

"I like how the blackberries look against the cream," said Tod.

"Very fresh," Ernest observed. He exchanged a glance with his twin. "Do I detect the helping hand of Weatherman Wally and some out-of-season climate control at work?"

"He also likes blackberries," Tod allowed. "And autumn."

Bert and Ernie examined the enormous trifle for a few more moments before nodding.

"Who doesn't?" they asked.
