Between 2020 and 2021, I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about children’s horror. It started with my Nightworms blog post about the scary books that I grew up reading. I discussed classics like Goosebumps and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but I also talked about books that I had thought were obscure—that is, until other readers confirmed that they too had been raised on Paul Zindel’s Reef of Death or J. B. Stamper’s Tales for the Midnight Hour. In April, to honor children’s horror, I also posted a series of Instagram photos that highlighted books from my childhood, titles like The Dark-Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural and Bloody Waters: Terrorizing Shark Tales. Once again, I was greeted by more enthusiastic horror fans who had also read these books when they were kids.

Those two occurrences led to so many questions…

Well, Netflix has all four seasons (plus a dozen additional specials) of the Goosebumps television series from the 1990s, as well as over 100 episodes of the original run of The Twilight Zone. Over on CBS All Access you can watch both the classic version of The Twilight Zone as well as the 2019 Jordan Peele-narrated reboot. And then there is the offbeat children’s light-horror show Eerie, Indiana on Amazon Prime Video if you want a nice throwback.

There were plenty of horror anthologies in the '80s, but shows like Tales From the Crypt were essentially R-rated and obviously aimed at grown-ups. It wasn't until the ‘90s that TV started catering to kids who liked to be spooked, as Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Goosebumps helped create a new generation of horror fans. Just in time for Halloween, and to celebrate the shows' 30th and 25th anniversaries — respectively — we're gathering around the campfire, and submitting for the approval of the Midnight Society, a tale of two horror shows and the golden age of kids' horror. Beware — you're in for a scare.

Even weirder when you know Eerie, Indiana was filmed in Studio City, California and AYAOTD was filmed in Quebec. It had to be on purpose since they weren't filming anywhere near each other and didn't just find a cool mask in a prop box by chance.

I figured it out thanks to someone in a facebook group.

Zeebos mask was from a mask designer called Don Post. The mask was not created for the episode. It was literally a complete coincidence.

Does anyone else remember Eerie, Indiana? in my (totally unbiased and not at all formed when I was around 8 years old) opinion it’s probably the best horror show for children, surpassing Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps. it only ran for one season (I didn’t watch the 1998 spin-off) because it was too good to last. Every episode was so creative and it balanced humor with some genuinely creepy atmosphere. Please understand all I’m saying here is from a child’s perspective because I haven’t seen it in forever, but isn’t a child’s perspective what matters? Still, if I find the episodes online I’ll rewatch it this October.

This Horror Club episode we discuss "Polaroid", the 2019 film directed by Lars Klevberg. And as we run through the weird urban legends of Polaroids, we also bring up… Locke & Key, Horse Girl, Eerie, Indiana, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Madelaine Petsch, throuples are all the rage, walking around with a kerosene lantern, there’s a lot of loose ends to this movie, Mitch Pileggi, predicts the future, there's a lot of homicidal kids, the whole scarf thing, Beta-test from the 40’s, ping pong, given my experience with photography and fire, lamp placement, there’s a deeper level to this that I never picked up on before, a lot of things in this movie that come up - that there's no payoff for, conspiracy theory, Tupperware, Instax, Goosebumps, fetchin' collarbones, somebody in this scenario needs to be creeped out by this - ‘cause I am, CGI, that noise, Joe Hill, a brandable name, surely it's not meant to be this dark, a movie so underdeveloped that you’ll want to shake it, Grace Zabriskie, it’s built into human DNA, in the darkroom, giving Georgie something to do, The Mummy and the Island of the Samoas.
