Photo Five Picture Prompts

So, after a mobile phone video of a lighthouse in the rain prompted this awesome fic from lipstickcat, I thought we could use some picture prompts here at the Eerie, Indiana fandom. On the 5th, 15th and 25th of the month, I'll put up a post where we can share photos or pictures that evoke a sense of Eerie, and these can be used as prompts for fic or art or a poem or icons or whatever shakes loose.

Well I borrowed my brother’s DVDs of Eerie Indiana and I must say, that after revisiting the show some 20 years later it is still pretty damn amazing! I have to admit that Are You Afraid of the Dark was better than Goosebumps, but Eerie Indiana is better then AYAOTD. It’s filled with great characters and great writing, it also doesn’t hurt when Joe Dante has a helping hand behind it. To my surprise there was a spinoff show called Eerie Indiana: The Other Dimension. I’m gonna have to check that out, although I doubt it will be as good as the original.

Imagine taking the quirkiness of a David Lynch-type series and applying it to a show for kids. The result might look something like Eerie, Indiana, which aired for a single season on NBC in 1991 and followed the adventures of a boy and his best friend who, much to their dismay, live in one of the most bizarre towns imaginable.

The short-lived TV series “Eerie, Indiana” will always have a special place in my heart. A mix of sci-fi/ supernatural/ mystery genres aimed at young adults, “Eerie” was definitely ahead of its time when it premiered on NBC in 1991, a full two years before the “adult” show its most compared to, “The X-Files.” Since it was not only released in the prime of my adolescence (I was a young, bright-eyed lad of 13 when the show first aired) but also took place in and made reference to my home state right in the title, I was easily hooked. Like so many fond remembrances from our youth, however, a reconnection with this series as an adult has sadly shown me that my memories of the show were viewed through rose-colored glasses.

“Eerie” follows a young boy named Marshall Teller, who moves with his family to Eerie (population 16,661, whether this was before or after his family joined the community is unclear, natch), a small town in Indiana with some seriously strange goings-on. While my understanding is that Eerie was not specifically based on the template of any one town, its name was obviously a play on the real-life town of Erie, Indiana, although I haven’t found any information or documentation that the real-life town embraced its fictitious counterpart in any way.

Aaand then it segues into trying to make you buy a book to read the rest of the review, so pfft, whatever to that.

Sometimes a single TV episode can exemplify the spirit of its time and the properties that make television a unique medium. A Very Special Episode presents The A.V. Club’s survey of TV at its most distinctive.

When DC Comics decided to reboot Superman in the mid-’80s—the first of many reboots to come—editor Julius Schwartz agreed to let an eager Alan Moore write the last adventure of the “old” Superman, in a story called “Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?” As a way of hedging their bets, Moore and DC dubbed it “an imaginary story,” reviving a concept DC writers often used in the ’50s and ’60s when they wanted to play around with the Superman mythology without wrecking continuity. But Moore threw a curveball in his opening caption, writing, “This is an Imaginary Story… aren’t they all?” This has become a well-quoted line, cited by anyone easily irritated by the way science-fiction/fantasy/adventure fans become preoccupied over what’s “real” or what isn’t in their favorite fictional universes. For some, though, when Alan Moore wrote that line, he committed a crime against fiction.
