And much like Eerie, it looks like it got cancelled. Sigh.

Last October, the Hub Network premiered Spooksville—a television series based on the books by Christopher Pike.

The series was quite well-received, even winning a Daytime Emmy, but nobody seemed to be talking about it, probably because barely anyone knew it existed. Now the series is on an indefinite hiatus and may not return, which is a damn shame, because Spooksville deserves to stay on the air.

Spooksville tells the story of Adam Freeman (Keean Johnson), an adolescent who moves to the small town of Springville with his father. Shortly after his arrival, Adam meets Sally Wilcox (Katie Douglas) and Watch Waverly (Nick Purcha), a pair of local misfits. Sally is sharp-tongued; Scrappy-Doo if he were a 14-year-old girl, while Watch is a brainy tech-kid. Sally and Watch warn Adam that there is more than meets to eye when it comes to Springville, or “Spooksville” as they call it.

After initially dismissing them as a couple of weirdos, Adam finds himself seeking help from Sally and Watch after he is attacked by a robotic monster later that evening, and the the trio becomes fast friends. From there, the series follows Adam, Sally, and Watch as they investigate strange occurrences around town. From traditional ghosts to evil magicians, crab monsters, evil lawn gnomes, and everything in-between, the three friends are forced to get creative in order to dispose of everything nightmares are made of.

Spooksville‘s characters are charming, especially for a group of youngsters, and the acting is surprisingly solid. As bold as her onscreen presence is, it’s completely justified that Katie Douglas was nominated for a Daytime Emmy, and her chemistry with Johnson and Purcha truly elevates the whole series. Oddly enough, Spooksville‘s plot is very similar to that of another television series from the early 1990s…

Spooksville

Eerie, Indiana finds an adolescent named Marshall Teller moving to a mysterious new town where an eccentric boy of around his age, Simon Holmes, clues him in on the bizarre happenings that occur in Eerie, prompting the new friends to begin investigating.

Sadly, Eerie, Indiana was very short-lived, lasting only one season before its cancellation. Years later, the series found a new fan-base when reruns began being aired on FOX. Sadly, it was too little too late, as the actors from the first season had aged quite extensively by that point. A spin-off was produced, but the magic simply wasn’t there, and it was also canceled after one season.

Unfortunately, it appears as though Spooksville is on the path to suffer a similar fate. As of today, the series is on an indefinite hiatus, and the Hub Network has not announced any plans to renew the series for a second season. Reruns of Spooksville air at 3:30pm ET every weekend on the Hub Network, conveniently sandwiched in-between Goosebumps and The Haunting Hour.

Fans of old-school, family-friendly horror should tune in one Sunday afternoon and take a trip to Spooksville, as your time to do so could be running out…
