The fountain that had all summer entranced the unwary with the dancing colours beneath its green and foaming waters was dry now, its basin drained to reveal the bubbled white paint at the bottom of the pool. The official story, the one that made it into the Local News section of the Eerie Examiner, was that it was due for maintenance. The truth, or at least the truth according to Marshall Teller, was that a predatory and very hungry sub-species of Lorelei had set up home in the pool and was luring passers-by to their doom with a hypnotic light show.

“Look,” he said, pointing at the bent and twisted grate at the base of the main spout. “That’s how they got in, through the town water supply. Normally it would be blocked with dead leaves and wishing pennies, but the new maintenance guys were too good at their jobs and kept everything too clean.”

Edgar took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He could feel a headache coming on, one that had nothing to do with the cold air whipping around his ears or the almost painful brightness of the blue sky overhead.

“Marshall,” he said, speaking slowly and carefully. “Enough. Just stop. It doesn’t matter how many monster-infested wells and vacuum-cleaner ghosts you think there are in Eerie. You still need to clean your room.”

“It was a toaster,” Marshall muttered.
