The hanging baskets that lined the front of City Hall dripped with moisture, the smooth white paving slabs beneath them slowly darkening to a pale grey. Men and women in utilitarian jumpsuits emblazoned with the logo of the Eerie Nursery and Garden Centre used sprinklers on telescopic poles to soak the bright blooms with a constant stream of room-temperature water.

“Aren’t you worried about over-watering them?” asked Marshall, pointing to the spreading puddle directly underneath one basket that rotated slowly in an explosion of purple and yellow flowers.

“That’s sweat,” explained the woman, not taking her eyes off the long-range watering can she was manipulating with a skill born of many years experience. “In hot weather like this, it’s really important we keep the planters hydrated.”

A tendril of greenery, sprouting small white flowers along it’s woody length, snaked out from amongst the profusion of colour. A gaggle of office workers spilled from a nearby building and the vine darted in their direction, attracted by the noise or the movement, Marshall wasn’t sure. The plant-wrangler grimaced and spun the heavy watering pole between her gloved hands, twisting the wayward stem around the hosepipe. She gave it a quick sharp jerk, depositing the vine back on the dark earthy surface of the basket, then turned to Marshall.

“That’s what happens if they get too thirsty,” she said. “Are you interested in horticulture? We have a summer program for volunteers...”

“Not really,” said Marshall. “It’s more a personal safety issue. Although I would like to know why the Mayor has blood-sucking plants outside his office.”

The plant-handler shrugged.

“Above my paygrade,” she said, dismissing citizenry-eating plants as a matter for upper management rather than the operatives employed to keep them in check.

Marshall stared.
