Eerie Indiana Gothic
Date: 2019-07-08 03:57 pm (UTC)Ampisand, E, Janet/Dash/Marshall
Date: 2019-08-11 01:02 pm (UTC)“What are you doing?” Dash asked as Janet rested her head on his shoulder. Instead of replying right away, she instead wrapped her arms around him; first the front than wiggling one under his back. The whole time she got comfortable, using him as a headrest, she barely took her eyes off the portable television in front of her.
Outside the window, the train chugged along, passing by cornfields as far as the eye could see; Dash knowing better than to try and see the end to them. The harder you looked the harder it was to escape. Halloween ‘95 had taught them all that much.
The portable television technically belonged to Marshall, he’d brought it years ago in an effort to recreate Mitchell’s weirdness finder. Sadly, whatever genius Mitchell had spun with a coat hanger, portable television and fish finder. Tragically, the only one of them to ever have any luck with it was Janet, who after reading the manual, picked up Todd and Donna.
“Red, what are you doing?” He asked, as his only reply was a pleasant little sigh.
“I’m being physically affectionate. You know. Like how you are when you love someone.”
This made him hesitate. It wasn’t like it was the first time Janet had professed her love for him or for Marshall but it was usually when they were otherwise...engaged and who wants to get talky-feely in the middle of sex anyway?
Before he could make up something smart to say in reply, he felt another pair of arms come around him; wiggling into the space behind him Janet had managed to free up. Marshall then placed his head on Dash’s other shoulder. He noticed that they both seemed to use the same shampoo, but Janet’s hair smelled over-straightened as was the look she was keen on these days.
“And what are you doing, Slick?” He asked, slightly exasperated but...In a good way. Marshall had his headphones half on his head, plugged into his walkman and listening to something. If Dash had to guess it would be the latest edition of ‘Self Help for Cryptid Hunters (and Cryptids).
“I’m using you as an extremely convenient headrest. It’s what you do when you love someone, trust me my parents do it all the time.” He said, matter of factly. Marshall viewed his parents as the pinnacle of love, so if he was mentioning them, he probably meant it. A light blush burnt its way across his nose; and up under his eyes.
There wasn’t any particular way they labeled themselves since it seemed like a waste of time anyway but in the Real World (with capital letters) they were Janet&Marshall, and Dash. Janet&Marshall, young professionals striking out on their own. He was their friend who lived on the other side of the duplex. But this wasn’t that. This was Janet&Dash&Marshall. With ampersands and everything.
A long moment passed, the only sounds were the thump-thump of the train, the creak of the ancient joints keeping this carriage attached to the one in front and the voices from Janet’s television.
“You’re lucky I love both of you or I’d push you on the floor.” He said, finally.
Then he settled back in, with his novel, feeling in good company.
