I love this one,it's just short enough to read while I wait for the kettle to boil on a tea break at work - it's the perfect tiny relaxation ritual

I feel like Janet is mostly the sensible one but sometimes goes off the chain in a way that puts the other two to shame

Mars: an unstoppable force
Dash: an immovable object
Janet: the single brain cell stopping them from accidentally leveling Eerie.

a/n i just wanted to write soft dash. shoot me if you must.

ā€œNot like this!ā€ Janet pleaded, as Dash held onto her arm with both of his. Down below her was nothing but blackness and stillness. Certain death at the bottom of a casam if she fell. Janet had come back from the brink before; but this was different. It felt different. ā€œPlease don’t let me fall!ā€

ā€œI’m doing my best.ā€ He grunted, trying to find purchase on the dirt with his feet, but all he was really managing to do was kick up dirt. Wally hadn’t seen fit to give them a storm in forever; the ground was dry and dusty. It really didn’t help that Janet was swinging backwards and forward with the wind, and the momentum of her trying to get traction on the side of the cliff to pull herself up.

Another tiny earthquake rocked the earth, sending a spill of tiny rocks and dirt into Janet’s hair, and temporarily making Dash loosen his grip as he tried to not fall over the edge himself. If Janet died, Monroe might have another heart attack. Marshall would certainly throw caution to the wind and kill him. Simon might not stop him.

This was all Marshall’s fault anyway. He hadn’t figured out how yet. Marshall usually didn’t seem the sort to mess with natural disasters. Wally’s new junior presenter also didn’t have much to do with Marshall but there had to be something. He’d find it out after he managed to save Janet’s life.

His shoulders was on fire, they felt like they were about to be wretched from his body from the stress of holding up another person who was basically deadweight. He could feel a persistent twitch running along his muscles as they strained against his skin like they were trying to break free. All he could do was pray that they didn’t start in his hands. And he didn’t pray, not to anything or anyone if he could help it.

Jesus, they were going to prom next week. Monroe hasn’t even enacted her dramatic prom-posal for her yet. She had a huge horror movie themed sign made, and a Carrie costume to wear; everything. Dash had helped her make it, and originally he thought he just wanted to pour blood on her head but realized...Yeah. Marshall had really roped him into this friendship crap.

Dropping Janet had nothing to do with how bad it would make everyone else feel. It was about how it would make him feel because despite it all. Despite the arguing, the bickering and maybe even jealousy before she got together with Monroe, Janet was his friend. The realization in and of itself surprises him enough that he almost drops her. She must feel the minute loosening of his hand because she starts screaming.

ā€œDon’t drop me! Oh, God! Oh, God I’m gonna die!ā€

ā€œYou’re not gonna die!ā€ He shouted back, feeling renewed fight.

He tried again to get her up over the lip. But it was no use, he wasn’t strong enough. Janet was still clinging on for dear life. The toe of one pink converse managed to make contact with the wall. The relief in his shoulder was instant. Suddenly, she wasn’t deadweight. She had one foot out of the grave, he thought, humorlessly.

Her other hand scrambled out, her fingertips bloody from grabbing helplessly at the chasam wall. Now she was stable, she could finally, finally, reach up onto firm ground and allow Dash to help her over the ledge. She looked manic, her eyes blown wide with fear, and perhaps disbelief that she’d survived. He felt a bit like that, but still kept his head screwed firmly onto his shoulders.

She hugs him, suddenly and with such force that they both fall to the ground, away from the ledge. His arms are aching bone deep, and his front is coated in dirt but he’s not angry. How could he be? Janet seems to be weeping in relief, and is just muttering thank you, over and over again. He tried to assure her that she was fine, but it didn’t help. She just kept crying and he kept awkwardly rubbing her back

They sat there for a while, while the ground shook under them. But they didn’t move. His arms felt like lead, and Janet was practically dead weight on him anyway. Finally, after one big and particularly devastating shake that seems to also shake Janet from her stupor, it stops. She lifts her tearstained face to look at him in surprise, before they both look around as the world begins to put itself together again.

The chasam starts to rise again. The house starts to right itself and over head, it begins to rain. Weatherman Wally has been restored to his rightful position, he thought, urging Janet to stand. He didn’t really want to stick around to find out if this particular piece of ground was going to try to rest itself. She did, but barely. She had to hold onto his arm to stop from falling over.

Conceringly, he didn’t want her to let go.

ā€œDash.ā€ She says, as they slowly made their way toward the road, in which snakes of tar were fixing the cracks. ā€œThank you. I mean it.ā€

ā€˜Yeah, whatever. You owe me.ā€ He says, so that she won’t think he’s going soft on him.

ā€œYou can eat off my lunch tray every day for the rest of highschool.ā€ She assures him, trying to lift the mood. Monroe is sprinting towards them, followed by Slick, (who seemed to be limping?), Simon and, surprisingly, Syndi. He decanted her onto Monroe’s arm, and they went into the house. Mrs Teller had a coupon to Eerie Pizza, and not even the apocalypse itself could stop them delivering.

If he falls asleep on Slick’s shoulder, wearing his spare pajamas and wrapped in an oversized fluffy towel amongst his friends, while watching Halloween and listening to Simon explain how they saved the day then no one mentions it. He’s too tired to even make fun of the side of his head that seems to have had a haphazard haircut with a lightning bolt.
