Written for Day 5 of the
31_days October challenge. The prompt was "Nature, schmature."
"I can't even look at you right now," Howard said in disgust.
"Why?" asked Wally, looking hurt.
Howard gestured to their surroundings. To their left and right, white sandy beaches stretched away into the distance, and immediately in front of them, cerulean blue water shimmered with gold highlights under the tropical sun, warm and inviting and so clear you could see that the seabed beneath was miraculously free of stones or seaweed or unpleasant marine wildlife. Further out, dolphins were leaping in the surf, and on the shore, palm trees laden with bananas and coconuts provided shade from the tropical sunshine.
"How do you not know that Indiana is a landlocked state?" Howard snapped. "This is ridiculous! You can't just summon up paradise on a whim and then say, 'Oh, this is what the town of Eerie looks like now' just because you want to get a tan."
"I'm on holiday," said Wally reasonably.
"Indiana is not Hawaii!"
"Of course it isn't," said Wally. "Except for this part of it. This part of it is, for the next two weeks."
Howard put his face in his hands and moaned.
"Coconuts and bananas don't even grow on the same tree!" he whimpered.
"Want to help me build a fire pit?" asked Wally. "I'm going to roast a pig in it later."
"You're vegetarian!"
"This pig is made of vegetables, but tastes exactly like bacon."
"This is worse than the ghost train. This might be the most unscientific thing you've ever done, including the night you created a thunderstorm because you were watching Frankenstein and needed the right ambience."
"So, you don't want to help me build a fire pit?"
"Of course I'm going to help build it!" shouted Howard. "Otherwise you'll probably decide it cooks the meat by voodoo magic or something equally ridiculous!"
Wally grinned.
