The Blackout Club Brings Teenagers Vs Monsters Co-Op To PS4 In 2019

Boy, talk about perfect timing.

With 80s style Monster Squad horror all the rage again thanks to films like IT (2017) and the runaway success of Stranger Things, it seems right that gaming would start to pick up on the genre as well. Developed by Question LLC, an indie studio made up of former AAA devs (who’ve worked on the likes of BioShock and Dishonored), The Blackout Club looks to bring “teenagers vs monsters” horror to PS4 next year. From Micheal Kelly (a producer and designer at Question):

In The Blackout Club, up to four players become a team of teenage investigators uncovering a monstrous secret at the heart of their quiet community. Like many of our favorite horror movies and shows in the “teens vs. monsters” genre, we love vulnerable heroes working together to survive a harrowing journey into the unknown. Unlike those beloved movies, though, we put you directly in the protagonists’ sneakers to solve the mystery together with your friends.

The Blackout Club follows a group of teens who bond over a shared secret. They’ve all been temporarily losing consciousness — sometimes for days at a time — and waking up in strange places with no memory of what they’ve been doing. During one such blackout, a friend of theirs mysteriously vanishes. No one believes them — not the police, not their teachers… not even their parents. The club’s only recourse is to launch an investigation on their own.

Honestly, this idea sounds too fun not to at least try. A lot of us horror fans grew up on this sort of stuff, from Goonies to the original 90s IT, to even more obscure sorts of things like the TV series Eerie, Indiana or books like Monster of the Month Club. It feels instantly nostalgic to us, and I’m betting that’s why things like Stranger Things have taken off so well (on top of just being excellent in its own right).
