Written for day 11 of the
31_days challenge. The prompt was "Blank sheet of paper"
Marshall stared at the typewriter, feeling a cold, sick surge of fear and dread spreading through his entire body. It sat on the scarred worktable that ran the length of the secret spot, nestled between the two-headed cat skeleton under a glass specimen dome and the tombstone radio that only played music from the 1940s. There was already a blank sheet of paper fitted between the feed roller and the platen. The "property of NBC" sticker, complete with brightly coloured peacock logo, caught the late-afternoon sunlight as it slanted through the arched windows of the attic.
He couldn't say for sure how long he stood there, watching it with the sort of paralysed apprehension that you might apply to a poisonous spider spotted in the corner of the room. It must have been a while, though; his parents and Syndi were sitting down to dinner when the typewriter dropped past the kitchen window and shattered on the path leading to the back door.
