Written for Day 31 of the
31_days October challenge. The prompt was: "The sounds under the full moon"
In the movies, a werewolf transformation almost always involves a lot of screaming, the cracking noise of a skeleton breaking and reforming, and some kind of unpleasantly wet and meaty sounds that is supposed to be what human skin sounds like when it peels away from an underlayer of thick, matted fur.
Maybe the movies got it wrong, or maybe it's different when you throw a little unicorn DNA into the mix, but Marshall's monthly transformation is usually preceded by a sneezing fit during which he coats the secret spot and anyone standing nearby in multi-coloured glitter, then something that sounds suspiciously like a theremin being played in the next room, and finally a tinkle of wind chimes as the rainbow spray clears and reveals his new form in all it's Marsicornish glory.
The first time Dash saw it happen, he laughed so hard that he inhaled some of the glitter, and continued to laugh even as he coughed and wheezed and spat pastel-hued saliva into the tissues Simon thrust at him as he knelt choking on the floor. The second time, he knows enough to stand well back, and when it's done he asks if anyone's told Rainbow Brite where she can find her horse. It turns out Marshall can still talk in his Marsicorn form, that his voice doesn't even change, but everything he says is accompanied by the sound of a xylophone. Dash find this so funny that he gets a stitch in his side, and the rest of the night is soundtracked by increasingly angry shouts of "Shut up you jerk!" interspersing peals of laughter and gasped exclamations of "Ow, ow, ow."
