In which (for possibly the last time) I re-watch an Eerie, Indiana episode with script in hand and compare the two.

So I have one more script:

nobrain_cover.jpg

There are a couple of differences in the opening scene...

nobrain_1.jpg

The guy with the thing moving in the bag in the establishing shot is not here in the script. Also, in the episode, Syndi doesn't turn to wave to anybody.

Marshall's V.O. is a bit different. "[T]he egg rolls are twitchen"?? I do not remember that ever being slang and Google is being no help here. Is this Mars' version of trying to make "fetch" happen?

Marilyn's fortune is cut from the final episode.

On page 2, she says, "What a tremendous smell he has" right before "That poor man" in reference to Chappy, which seems OOC for Marilyn and is also cut.

Then Syndi has this line:

nobrain_2A.jpg

Another reference to Normal, IL. (Well, it is their sister city, so I suppose they would be concerned with what goes on there.)

Also, we never do get to meet Wayne (maybe the person she was waving to in the restaurant?), but Marshall is not very impressed with him:
nobrain_3.jpg

Simon is actively scared of liberals, and I'm sorry the Brain Invaders bit was cut, because we miss getting to see Marshall make "an expression neither Marilyn or Edgar could say "no" too."

The action and dialogue when we first meet Eunice are a little different:
nobrain_4.jpg

Also, on the next page, Simon has a cut line: "Please, oh please, oh please, can we play "Brain Invaders" now?"

Things stay pretty much as scripted right about up to the point where they approach the guy and Marshall and Dash argue:
nobrain_6.jpg

I am kind of sorry we didn't get Dash's inevitable reaction to "...what if it was me lying there?"

And "I wasn't trying to be a point of light"? There's a reference that would be extremely dated on all future rewatches.

Also, note the cut part of the V.O. where Marshall uses Dash's name! This is set before LOoC. Continuity error, or is there another scene missing from another script?

There are a couple of lines cut from the bathroom scene here:
nobrain_8.jpg

Also, the script is mean to Simon! Stop dissing his haircutting abilities, script.

At the end of this scene, Marshall has a V.O. (also in the script) that starts "Chappy didn't seem like the kind of guy that someone would want to kidnap..." which is odd, because up until this point, nobody's called the guy by that name. There is also no cut line in the script that explains this.

In the script it's "...he didn't seem like an axe murderer or all that liberal either" instead of just "a liberal" and Chappy's "Ha!" is unscripted.

On the Canceled podcast last week, the hosts pointed out just how white Eerie is, and there's a bit in the script on Page 12 where Eunice is showing Charles' picture around which is notable for being the first time in any of the scripts I've seen where any character's race is specifically mentioned: "She stops a BLACK COUPLE before they enter the World 'O Stuff." [They did actually cast black actors to play the couple, which makes Eerie unlike certain major movies I could mention.]

Some minor dialogue differences when Dash and Eunice have their first proper conversation:
nobrain_10.jpg

"We can see that this will be a relationship devoid of small talk."

Eunice's slap and Dash's reaction are unscripted.

Some slight differences here--with some cut dialogue and some that appears later in the final cut--and the use of Dash's name again:
nobrain_12.jpg

On the next page, where they're looking through the shopping cart, Simon has a line that's cut: "Well, I would say he's a big time recycler."

Also, in lines that made it to screen, Marshall uses Chappy's nickname in the dialogue twice here:
"Didn't Chappy say he had "The Knack"? and "I've heard of getting a song stuck in your head, but Chappy's got it bad."
So even if we handwave the voiceovers were from things Marshall wrote down later...

From the script as Dash enters the Teller house: "Dash slides past Syndi, oiler than a vaccum [sic] salesman."

Marshall has an expository VO cut from the final episode as when we cut back to the shopping cart: "My hunch was right. We were slowly getting an idea who this guy really was."

Also in the script, it's a Reagan/Bush bumper sticker they find, not Bush/Quayle.

There's also an extended scene with Syndi, Dash and Chappy over the next few pages that doesn't make it to the final episode:

nobrain_13B.jpg

The fact that Marshall, at least, does grab the box before they run back to the Teller house in a panic is called out here.

Meanwhile, in the Teller house:
nobrain_14.jpg

And then:
nobrain_15.jpg

And then:
nobrain_16.jpg

In this version, Dash somehow manages to get away improbably fast without anybody noticing.

Meanwhile, Eunice is practicing her Robert De Niro impression:

nobrain_17.jpg

After this bit, things go pretty much as scripted with minor differences.

In the script, it's "My hair itches" instead of "My hair hurts! Yeow!"

This bit is missing from Eunice's monologue about Charles: "They cheered him in Vienna; at the Sorbonne they called him Le Brain."

Dash prompts, "What happened then?" before Eunice's "I had the world at my fingertips."

And after "...Charles is like this" she zaps Charles again for no reason!

Dash says, "Geez!" in reaction to this.

Simon has a cut line in the Secret Spot scene: "No wonder they don't make eight-tracks anymore. CD's are way easier." [Would he be buying vinyl in "Broken Record" if he had a CD player, though?]

Also in this scene, Simon is the one who flips the switch. While wearing the helmet. [I like this better as aired, as Simon has more common sense than that.]

The Brainalyzer settings as described in the script: "There's one large power switch and gauge with three [sic] settings: DOWNLOAD, UPLOAD, SAVE, AND POTPOURRI."

Simon's last line, as scripted: "Who's Simon? My name is Charles "Chappy" Furnell, and I'd like a cigarette." [Continuity? What continuity?]

I'll be back with the next part in a bit.

Im glad they cut out Marilyns line about Chappys smell since it really doesnt suit the character, but i howled with laughter at Mars claiming that Wayne's parents are cousins. Wayne sucks. Fuck that guy.

That would have been BRILLIANT. I picture him saying it in such a deadpan way, too.

LOL, I love that two of the Dash cut lines are about not wanting to be touch or touch others. I also love him getting suckered into Todd and Donna, figures TV would be his weak spot.

I am kind of sorry we didn't get Dash's inevitable reaction to "...what if it was me lying there?"

Yeah, it's a bit naive, if kinda sweet of Mars to expect anything but that, really.

I felt you running down my thigh, Sharona?! O_O

This aswell as Dash's name being used makes me think maybe the episodes as aired arent the intended order. Or mars is really just that naive to think dash wouldnt laugh in his face if he fell down in an alley...

Is... is that part of the lyrics?!

I just read them and... oh my God, some of thoselines would have been terrifying coming from a crazy possibly axe-murdering homeless guy directed at children!

I'd much rather believe they are about bologna. To the extent where I am actively going to persuade myself that they're singing about the Foreverware sandwich...

I have this picture in my head now of Marshall coming home to find Dash and Syndi deeply engrossed in the newest episode of Todd and Donna and just rolling his eyes. (He's learned from experience that bad things will happen if he talks during the program.)

I want fic of both these scenarios now.
