The falling rain burbled in the overflowing gutters, splashed down the drainpipe and made a soft metallic pinging sound as it bounced off the guardrail which ran the length of the fire escape. By the single smeary window in the Loyal Order of Corn’s dusty storage room, Mister Radford paused for a moment to listen before returning to the task at hand. A pentagram drawn in chalk and blood, smudged around the edges but still easily recognisable, was stubbornly resisting his efforts to purge it with clary sage and colloidal silver.
He was wondering whether he’d have better results with a mundane scrubbing brush and a bucket of hot soapy water when a sudden flash of movement in a dark corner caught his eye. Behind a broken-down and partially scavenged popcorn maker, between loosely piled sacks of kernels and industrial-sized jugs of butter-flavoured corn syrup, something was glittering.
Radford set the burning sage down in the fire-proof ceremonial bowl that the Eerie Fire Department recommended for use in all purifying rituals involving conflagration, and fetched a long-handled pole with a loop of salt-infused cold iron at the end. He stood in the opposite corner of the room, holding the pole at the very end, and began to shift the supplies out of the way.
A hairline crack ran from the baseboard to a point about half-way up the wall. The paint around it was bubbling and falling away, and from somewhere beneath the plasterboard there came the sweet, musky smell of an adjacent reality seeping through into a neighbouring world. Radford gave the aerosolized can of holy water and juniper berries a vigorous shake, sprayed a thick protective barrier over the damage, and went downstairs to place a call to the mayor’s office.
