Written for Day 27 of the [livejournal.com profile] 31_days July challenge. The prompt was "Look at this weather, I could do better."

The rain fell in cascading sheets of grey from a leaden sky and the ground was treacherous in its layer of freezing slush. Those unfortunate souls whose errands could not wait slipped and stumbled on the pavements and shivered in the icy downpour.

In her parent’s warm, bright living room, Syndi Teller tapped her fingers against the windowpane, impatience showing in every line of her body. From the kitchen came the smell of baking brownies and the thin sound of Simon Holmes singing along with the Carpenters on the radio. On the upstairs landing, something vast and carapaced and multi-legged clicked and scuttled. She heard Marshall’s bedroom door open, sneakered feet on the carpeted floor, followed by a cry and a crunch.

“Mars?” she said cautiously.

“It’s okay,” he called back. “I got it.”

Something squelched. Marshall made a long, drawn-out sound of disgust.

“Do you need the dustpan and brush?” she asked.

There was a pause, during which Syndi imagined her little brother with his head cocked to one side, appraising the carnage from yet another other-worldly bug invasion.

“Yes please,” he replied. Then after a moment, “And the heavy-duty garbage sacks we use for the garden. And... can you get the flamethrower from under the stairs?”

As Syndi gathered up the slippery black plastic bags, held the fuel canister between her teeth and coiled a length of heat-resistant tubing over one arm, she wondered when the ice-storm would let up. She hoped it would be soon; they needed it to clear if the inter-dimensional pest exterminator was ever to get through.

"And... can you get the flamethrower from under the stairs?"

Because of course they've got a flamethrower under the stairs! I don't know what I love more here: this or Simon singing along to the Carpenters.
