Written for Day 6 of the
31daysoffandom October challenge. The prompt I used for this one was "blood"
"Is that a blood storm?!" demanded Marshall Teller incredulously.
Simon looked up from his comic book. On the Teller's big black television set, Weatherman Wally stood beside his weather map, pointer extended to indicate a cartoonishly-drawn cloud dripping viscous red streaks over Eerie's farmland.
"Oh," he said. "Is it Beltane already? I didn't see the Maypole in town square yesterday."
Mars stared at him. Even after three years in Eerie, he sometimes had trouble remembering all the little festivals and celebrations that fed the small town's beating heart. Simon had even given him a "sacrifice of the day" calendar last Christmas, but it hadn't helped much. Mostly it just made him talk about home-schooling.
Simon set aside his comic, part of a six-issue miniseries about a young boy called Stanley Hope in an alternate version of Eerie where he battled interpersonal issues instead of nightmare creatures from the dark recesses of the human soul. It was cheesy sci-fi trash, of course, but he read it for the escapism rather than any literary merit it might have pretended towards.
"I think you were sick from hydra bites last year," he said. "And the year before that we stayed up late the night before trying to catch the Grey Mare that was haunting the apple orchards and eating the farm hands, and you ended up sleeping all day and missing the party."
Marshall frowned, worrying his lower lip between his teeth as he cast his mind back to the previous years.
"I think I would have remembered blood falling from the sky," he said. "Even if I slept through the actual storm, I'd have noticed puddles of gore everywhere when I woke up."
"Oh no," said Simon. "The city donates all left-over precipitation to the Starving Vampires of Indiana for their annual blood drive. Anything that's not absorbed into the soil, the STVI comes by with a black van and a bunch of crazy straws and they just suck it all up. It's actually really great to watch, although of course the vampires don't show up on camera so the newspapers never bother to cover it."
Marshall blinked.
