BLARGH! Sorry guys, my internet went down Friday afternoon and I'm only just back up and running, so I missed posting my [livejournal.com profile] 31daysoffandom fics for the last few days.

Anyway, this was written for Day 14 and the prompt I used was "monster"

Dragon expectorant had the consistency of mucus, the pale pink colour of cherry blossom in the spring, and the smell one might expect from the mouth of a fire-breathing lizard with poor dental hygiene and a diet heavy in red meat. It also contained a distressingly high number of skeletal human remains, which jutted sharply out of the wide pools of dragon-spit littering the landscape and did nothing to ameliorate the general unpleasantness of the area.

Simon stood on tip-toe at the edge of one puddle, poking at the congealed surface with a long stick. It quivered like a jelly to which too much water had been added, preventing it from ever fully setting no matter how many hours it sat in the refrigerator. Within its gelatinous depths, a human skull grinned a broken-toothed and maniacal grin at the empty sky.

“Gross,” said Marshall, who was stirring another puddle a little distance away. The pungent odor of reptilian halitosis rose from the viscous pool. He hooked a fallen branch through what appeared to be an adult man’s pelvis and, with a small effort, pulled it free of the sucking mire. At his feet, a small bright blue bucket in the shape of an upside-down castle contained a few fragmented phalanges still tangled in pond weed.

Dash walked past, dragging a rib cage from which a splintered arm bone dangled limply. The sternum was buckled and dented, as though from some great weight that had been brought to bear upon the skeleton’s hapless former occupant. He tossed the sad remains into a large wheelbarrow, then rummaged in his coat pockets retrieve the vertebra that had fallen out.

“I know a couple of evokers who would pay good money for this junk,” he said, sounding studiedly casual.

Marshall gave a theatrical sigh and turned his face skyward with the most put-upon expression he could manage, but did not otherwise respond. Simon let out an annoyed grunt as the recalcitrant skull slipped from its perch on the end of his stick and sank slowly into the slimy puddle of dragon saliva.

“We’re supposed to be preventing another skeletal warrior outbreak,” he said, giving the wobbling surface a disconsolate poke as the skull drifted back to lie amidst the muck and weeds. “It sort of defeats the purpose if you’re selling the unquiet dead to the exact people we’re trying to keep them away from.”

Dash shrugged.

“Cable bill’s due, is all I’m saying,” he said.
