Written for the
fffc October challenge. The prompt was "creature: classic/mythological"
The safety rail had been rusted to a deep reddish brown by the salt air. Now it leant over the cliff face, straining like an eager dog tugging at the leash, it’s once-thick metal bars pitted to filigree and standing stark and shadowed against the pale white-blue of the sky. Beneath it, the grey sea washed gently back and forth, it’s surface untroubled by any waves. Water sloshed over the black rocks before retreating with a small sigh, leaving new-born rock pools in the pitted surface.
Fat mottled shapes in autumnal colours of grey and black and brown lay on the rocks, occasionally lifting their heads to track the flight of a noisy seabird or to watch a particularly interesting swell far out from shore. Their eyes were huge and dark, the iris a thin ring of brown so deep as to be nearly indistinguishable from the wide black pupils.
Marshall Teller stood a little way back from the teetering barrier, observing them from behind a pair of binoculars. Beside him, Simon sat cross-legged on a heavy plaid blanket hand-embroidered with protective wards stitched in silver thread. He was eating a sandwich.
Marshall sighed, pulled the field glasses away from his face and dropped into a sprawl atop the blanket.
“Okay,” he said. “You were right; those are just regular seals.”
Simon shrugged.
“They’re still cool,” he said.
Marshall leaned back, his arms behind his head as he stared at the sky.
“I don’t know what we’d do with a selkie skin anyway,” he said.
Simon nodded, and took another bite of his sandwich.
