Hot take time: 'Super 8' and 'Gravity Falls' did the recent "80s Amblin-esque kid adventures w/ spooky stuff" revival first, and set the stage for 'Stranger Things', which somehow seems - to my eyes at least - to get more hype, love, and credit.

(Not discounting ST btw.)
Gravity Falls seemed more like X-Files Jr than Amblin to me.

I think it's both. Episodes like 'Summerween' and such give me a bit of an Amblin/80s fantasy movie feel.

If you want an idea of what Kyle's talking about, here's an actual show from that era which very much inspired Gravity Falls, "Eerie, Indiana": https://t.co/ySA7DBiTp4

thought about bringing that up as well. It's an entire sort of genre basically.

Hirsch even joked that Gravity Falls was a shameless ripoff of Eerie.
