The red and white tape fluttered in the breeze, the thin plastic making a staticky humming noise as the wind stretched it taut. Marshall stood well back, both to keep clear of the affected area and to ensure he got the whole thing in shot.
Simon leant against the uneven stone wall, one leg raised so he could balance his clipboard on his knee. He was filling out Form 1A, a page-long checklist for use during initial contact with potential weirdness. He added the date, time, phase of the moon, and some observations about the weather.
“I dunno, Mars,” he said. “I’m pretty sure it’s just a fresh-painted park bench. The papers did say there’d be workmen in the civic gardens this week, getting everything ready for the summer.”
Marshall shook his head sadly at such naivety.
“That’s just what they want you to think, Simon,” he said.
