Eerie, Indiana fanfiction: Signals and Signifiers

Quick drabble-and-a-half based on the third of these drawings.



"But... what is it?" asked Simon.

It was the third time he'd uttered those words in as many minutes, and Marshall still didn't have an answer. He raised the camera to eye level, focused on the image in the view-finder, then lowered it again without taking the shot, shaking his head in disgust.

Atop the high radio tower, a twenty foot spruce tree decked in pulsating blue bubble-lights cast a sweep of ice-pale illumination across the tarmacked lot. A half dozen old-fashioned patrol cars, their roof-racks groaning with the weight of survelliance equipment strapped to them, glowed luminous white as the rotating beacons cast their beam over them, only to become a mass of shadow and bristling spikes once the light moved on.

"I don't get it," said Marshall. "Are they decorating for Christmas, or signalling an alien invasion?"

"Could be both," said Simon.

"Just what we need," said Mars.
