The wind was blowing the falling rain into grey curtains that fluttered and waved over the wet rubber paving of the playground. The moon was high and bright and a filmy moon-bow wavered in the night sky, pale against the dark clouds. The rain rustled in the decorative borders that bounded the park, pattered on the dark green roof of the wooden pagoda and tinkled on the gleaming metal slope of the slides and the thick chains of the swing set.

Beneath the sound of the water were muted giggles, shouts of laughter muffled by rain and drowned by distance, and the noise of running feet on the soft surface. Small patches of bright colours, wellington boots and waterproof coats in reds and blues and yellows, flittered in and out of the moving shadows.

A little girl whose face had degraded over the years to a smudged oval of white kept pace with a spinning roundabout, the shadowed hollows of her eyes black and wide with excitement. In the griddle-patterned dark beneath the climbing frame, three more shapes huddled together in a misty rainbow, their heads bowed as they conferred over a game played with pebbles and sticks.

Simon Holmes leaned against the rusting and partially-collapsed iron railing that marked the northern-most corner of the abandoned playground.

“Maybe we should come back another time,” he suggested.

Harley peered through the heavy curtain of ivy that had covered the broken-down fence and shrugged.
