The cupcake sat in the centre of the plate, nestled amidst the crumbs and discarded wrappers of its fallen brethren. Dark chocolate sponge glittered wetly beneath a creamy expanse of vanilla butter-cream from which tiny marshmallows like lustred skyscrapers in pink and white.
“Huh,” said Marshall, loading a fresh battery pack into the video camera. “That new Home Ec teacher really knows her stuff.”
Simon gently lowered the transparent plastic cake dome over the platter, knocking loose a few stray clumps of frosting that threatened to block the breathing holes they’d drilled into it during shop class. The fairy, luminescent beneath the smears of sugar and chocolate, lay comatose amidst the edible silver ball bearings and the tall peaks of swirling buttercream. She never stirred as the two boys lifted the entire tray carefully from the table and eased it through the door of BF Skinner Junior High’s small but well-appointed teaching kitchen.
“This will blow the lid off Eerie for sure,” Mars continued, his voice low and soft and yet buzzing with excitement.
He grabbed a handful of teacher evaluation forms from the windowsill, shoving them into his jacket pocket while keeping the camcorder trained on his trusted associate with his free hand.
“Item,” he said, speaking carefully into the tiny microphone nestled above the flashing red light. “The Future Homemakers of America class can prove surprisingly useful, particularly the module on rapid-release energy sources and their effect on blood sugar levels.”
Simon peered through the plexi-glass shield and frowned.
“How mad do you think a pixie with a sugar headache is likely to get?” he asked.
“We did a pretty good job magic-proofing the old terrarium in the Secret Spot,” said Mars. “Although I never actually got my final grade on that project - I think the teacher was more focused on making sure Nick and Eddie didn't burn the school down. Anyway, once we get her in there, we should be safe."
“Okay,” said Simon, his expression doubtful. He continued to watch the sleeping fairy while Marshall switched off the classroom lights.
“Mars?”
“Yeah?”
“I'm failing Industrial Arts.”
Marshall stumbled.
