“Oh!”

Marshall glanced up from a mixing bowl brimming over with lumpy Plaster of Paris. Simon was on his feet, fumbling one handed for the Polaroid around his neck. His other arm was pointed at the sad-looking birch tree that cast the Holmes’ threadbare lawn into permanent shadow.

Mars set the basin down, flexing his hands to ward off an incipient cramp from dragging a heavy wooden spoon through the thick paste. The spoon stayed where he’d left it, the handle sticking straight up between the craggy peaks of grey sludge.

“What is it?” he asked, craning his neck to follow the line of Simon’s outstretched finger.

“I just saw a really fat robin,” said Simon. Marshall looked at him.

“A really fat robin,” he repeated. “Simon, it’s almost Christmas. Every little old lady and elementary school kid puts out seeds and dripping for the birds as soon as the weather changes. The ravens won’t take handouts, dusk sprites don’t come into gardens and everything else flies south for winter. The robins ’round here are always fat. I’ve seen rats in New Jersey that weren’t as well-fed as an Eerie robin.”

Simon shook his head.

“I don’t mean a regular winter-time robin,” he said. “I mean un-aerodynamically fat. Mars, I swear, it was almost a cartoon; a perfect circle with a triangle beak and two black sticks for legs. It looked like someone brought a little kid’s Christmas card to life and sent it fluttering over the hedgerow and up into that tree.”

Marshall looked up again. He chewed his lower lip. Amidst the bare black branches, something moved. Something a bold primary shade of red, and almost perfectly round. A twittering rendition of Jingle Bells drifted down to where the boys stood.

“Mars,” said Simon, seriously. “Do you think the Paper Witch celebrates Christmas?”
