“You can trust me,” said the bright morning sky. “Look how nice and clear I am. No clouds anywhere!”
Marshall scowled up at it through the window, reaching for his coat.
“You won’t need that, buddy!” said the sky. A golden sunbeam lanced through the glass, illuminating a pair of cheap plastic sunglasses coated in a thin layer of dust.
“This is what you want today,” said the sky. “Sunshine! Warmth! A cooling breeze on your bare arms as you walk to work!”
Marshall turned away, pulling on the heavy woollen coat. He fished deep within one capacious pocket, eventually retrieving a much-folded plastic poncho, and shook it out.
“Oh Marshall,” said the sky sadly. “Aren’t we friends? What about this beautiful day I made just for you? Why are you so suspicious?”
Marshall gritted his teeth.
“You’ve been sniggering since I woke up this morning,” he said.
“Sniggering?” said the sky, sounding hurt. “I would never-” it snorted, then calmed and continued – “I would never try to play a trick on my best buddy!”
Marshall located a bright yellow sou’wester beneath the sofa cushions and began fastening it under his chin.
The sky giggled merrily. It began to rain
