The heavy plate-glass door of Grandma’s Kitchen was streaked and cloudy with condensation. Marshall pushed it open and a warm burst of sweet-scented air puffed out onto the rain-damp sidewalk. Three identical old ladies working the sales counter looked up and flashed triplicate sets of gleaming dentures in a practiced smile. Behind them, three blue-rinsed figures in baker’s whites laboured before a vast wood-burning oven that could have done for Hansel, Gretel, the witch and a good portion of her gingerbread cottage.
Marshall swallowed, the sugar-sticky atmosphere coating his throat and lungs, cloying and enticing in equal measure.
“Hello dear,” said one of the old ladies at the counter.
“Hi,” said Marshall, giving them a nervous wave. “I’m here to pick up a special order?” His voice rose slightly at the end, making it sound like a question. He coughed and tried again. “It’s under the name of Teller...”
“Oh yes,” said a different but indistinguishable old lady. “It’s keeping cool in the back. I’ll just go and fetch it.”
She bustled off, the soft rubber of her sensible non-slip shoes shushing gently across the well-scrubbed industrial tiled floor. Her - sisters? clones? fellow Fates? Marshall had never managed to uncover exactly what was going on with Eerie’s premier bakery, but he was 90% sure they didn’t feed on human life force which put them ahead of most small business owners in town, so he didn’t push it - watched him with bright button-black eyes and the same faint smile on their plump, wrinkled cheeks.
“Here it is,” said the first old lady, reappearing from behind a beaded curtain that Marshall was sure hadn’t existed a minute ago. She checked the hand-written slip of paper taped to the large white box, her eyes flicking from the ornate calligraphy note and back to Marshall. She set it on the spotless countertop and flipped the lid back with a smooth, easy grace born of long practice, then ducked behind the worktop to retrieve a pair of collapsible cardboard carry handles.
“Would you like to check it’s all okay, dear?” she said, slotting the handles into a pair of perforated slots either side of the box and threading thick red and black ribbons between them to form a kind of sling.
“I’m sure it’s fine,” Marshall muttered, but peered over the high walls of heavy cream cardboard just in case.
“Wow,” he said.

"I didn't order any..."
"Yes dear, but in about four hours you'll really need this cake with a file in it, so I suggest you hustle."
