The spectral ocean that occasionally hovered over Lake Eerie and the surrounding areas had vanished with the rising dawn. A handful of discommoded seagulls had been left behind when it went and were now wheeling overhead, giving noisy voice to their displeasure.
On the blood-drenched slipway behind the Eerie Baitshop and Sushi Bar, Janet Donner paused in the act of feeding kraken tentacles through a meat grinder to glare at the screaming airborne plague. A cleaver sat atop a rough-hewn work table, glistening with viscous black blood and she reached for it without taking her eyes off the threat looming above her.
A Pacific gull broke away from the circling flock and plummeted towards the twitchy, squirming feast at Janet’s feet. It’s heavy red-tipped bill gawped hungrily, and Janet tensed, her knuckles whitening around the handle of the bloodied cleaver.
The scavenger came into range, screeching it’s discordant war cry. Janet screamed back and swung the heavy blade in a well-practiced arc...
...and watched in horror as the tactics that had all summer worked against the pteranodons which nested in the attic of the Mark Twain boarding house utterly failed to have an effect.
The gull soared, the bucket of kraken tentacles clutched in it’s claws, shrieking in triumph. Janet slammed the cleaver blade first into the wooden chopping block with more force than was strictly necessary and stomped over to the kitchen door, shouldering it open.
“Tell front of house the California rolls are off the menu,” she snapped.
