“Run!” said the lighted sign on the taxi roof. “Run! Run! Run!” it flashed, the letters backlit a sickly yellow-green against the black background.
Marshall’s stomach dropped. He stepped away from the curb, his eyes darting this way and that, seeking the oncoming danger. Simon turned to look up at him, his brow furrowed in confusion, mouth open to ask the question, and Marshall pointed at the bright yellow cab sedately making its way down the street towards them.
“Run for your life!” flickered the sign. “Sign up for the Eerie Relay Race in Deadwood Park! Raising money for Eerie Cancer Support!”
“Oh,” said Marshall with a sigh of relief.
Simon gave him a worried look.
“You know it’s only voluntary, right?” he asked. “The town doesn’t make sporting events compulsory anymore.”
“I know,” said Marshall. He’d still been in Jersey during the Sponsored Toddle of ’88, but he’d seen the archived footage of a looming mud-giant snatching plastic tiaras and glittering superhero capes from screaming pre-schoolers in brightly-coloured safety vests. “I thought it was something else.”
The taxi turned the corner ahead of them.
“No, really Mars,” it said. “You’ve gotta run. Danger everywhere.”
Marshall cursed.
“Doesn’t your sister have a Saturday job at EerieCabs?” asked Simon.
“Yeah,” said Marshall, making a rude gesture at the departing taxi. “She’s helping them test Dad’s new targeted mobile marketing technology.”
“It’s pretty impressive,” said Simon, as the sign changed to an all-caps declaration of Marshall’s bedwetting tendencies.
“I hate her,” said Marshall, gritting his teeth. Simon tried unsuccessfully to stifle a giggle.
