“Hot and cold snacks!” said the hand-lettered chalk board sign. “Cold drinks! Ice-cream! Served all day!”

Marshall and Simon stared at the small wooden building, the scuffed and dirty toes of their sneakers barely brushing the cracked rubber tiling that marked the edge of the old playground and the dilapidated snack shack at its centre.

“See?” said Simon, pointing at the fresh pink and blue scrawl advertising the daily special. He reached for the clunky Polaroid camera slung around his neck and took a picture. “And there’s been a different menu every day for the last week.”

Marshall considered the cobwebbed timbers, the shuttered windows, the security grill that had long-since rusted in place.

“Let’s have a look ’round the back,” he suggested.

They traced a wide circle around the forgotten park, skirting the long shadows cast by the half-collapsed jungle gym and the swing set that creaked ominously despite the lack of wind. A rust-eaten roundabout spun in place, so slowly that Marshall half-thought he imagined it, and a spring-mounted sea-lion with sun-bleached eyes of marble white turned to watch them as they passed.

The back of the little shed was a graveyard of decaying patio furniture, stackable chairs and folding tables crumbling to nothing under layers of mildew. The staff entrance was a narrow wooden door, swollen shut with rot and encrusted with fungus. Beside it, an empty carrycot rocked gently on the slimy concrete paving.

“Great,” said Marshall. “I guess we know what goes into Fresh-Baked Pie of the Day.”

Simon gasped. Marshall fished in his jacket pocket for a small picnic-sized shaker of salt.

“Just once, I’d like to find a moses basket in a haunted structure and have it be take-your-monster-kid-to-work day,” he said, sprinkling a thin line across the mouldering black rubber. “Have you got your exorcism kit?”

“Mostly,” said Simon, producing a pack of slim white candles, a small silver bell and a half-chewed Gideon Bible. He held them out with an apologetic grimace.

“Harley?” asked Marshall.

“Harley,” Simon confirmed.
