Mister Radford unlocked the small wooden side door that lead to the World o' Stuff's vast and unknowable storage space, and stepped inside. He reached out with one hand and, with the ease of long practice, turned on the overhead lights without looking. A shadow moved on the far wall, misshapen and dark against the neat rows of cream-coloured cardboard boxes. Radford frowned, his moustache curling down at the edges as he raised his head, seeking the source of the disturbance.
There. A gremlin, green and yellow and full of destructive malevolent glee, scurrying across his freshly painted ceiling rose. Radford picked up a broom, twirled the handle thoughtfully between the palms of his hands, then thrust it upwards in one savage motion. There was a thump and a muffled squeal, and Radford was just allowing the corners of his moustache to rise once more when he spotted the gremlin, dangling one-handed from the bristles of the brush. It grinned at him, all mischief and needle-pointed teeth, and began doing something unspeakable with it's other hand.
Radford was impressed despite himself.
"Oh, well done sir!" he said, flipping the broom hand over hand as though it were a twirling baton. The gremlin screeched and spun, eventually loosing it's grip to land, dizzy and disorientated, upon the scrubbed hardwood floor of the store-room.
"Well done indeed," said Radford, looming over it, terrible in his cardigan and his gardening slippers. "But no."
He stamped on the gremlin, which burst with the soft, ripe pop of a particularly satisfying pimple, smearing the dark wood.
"That was your own fault," Radford informed the mangled corpse. Shaking his head mournfully, he returned the broom to it's usual spot, retrieving a mop and bucket and some crystals of caustic soda.
"Gremlins," he thought. "They never learn."
