Written for the supermoon challenge.
The wounded rabbit lay on its' side, breathing fast and shallow. It's eyes were wide, the whites showing all around the midnight dark iris, and its' back legs kicked helplessly.
"Easy there, big guy," said Simon, pulling the surgical mask up over his face with one gloved hand. In the other, he held a pair of tweezers the length of his forearm. "It's okay. You're safe now."
The rabbit trembled. Foam gathered at the corners of it's mouth.
"It'll be okay," Simon said again. He lowered the protective eyeshield and blinked as his eyes sought to adjust. With the visor down, the celestial glare was diminished enough to let him see the wound clearly.
"It looks like buckshot," he thought, and he laughed a little at the thought of so prosaic an injury.
Moving carefully through a body of mist and moonlight, Simon approached the torn meat of the damaged back leg. Star fire blazed through a dozen miniature black holes that spiralled and whorled, growing larger even as he looked.
Simon tsked.
"Look what that mean old meteor shower has done to you," he said. "Don't worry though, we'll have you patched up in no time."
The rabbit stared up at him, its' expression glazed with pain and fear.
Simon put one hand just above the injury site, pressing down firmly. With the other, he drove the mammoth set of tweezers the largest hole.
Sheila, his ghostly office manager-slash-nurse-slash-personal-assistant, hovered nearby. Her eyes were huge and fascinated as Simon pulled out the first burning chunk of space rock, dropping it into the metal kidney bowl she held out to him.
"Now all I have to do," thought Simon grimly, "Is keep believing there's a giant space rabbit who lives on the moon long enough to complete this operation."
