"Hey," said Simon, not looking up from the stack of blood-splattered mail in his hand.

"Hey," Marshall replied, heading straight to the coffee pot and pouring himself a cup. "Anything interesting?"

Simon held up a padded envelope in pearlescent pink. Their address had been written in a familiar hand.

"Looks like Syndi sent us something," he said. "Mind if I open it?"

"Go ahead," said Mars, lowering himself into the least-wobbly kitchen chair.

Simon gave the envelope an exploratory squeeze. His face brightened.

"There's something in it," he said, tearing the top off. Marshall saw what was about to happen and opened his mouth to warn his friend but he was too late. Simon upended the package over the kitchen table, and a stream of multi-coloured confetti fluttered down, settling in his breakfast cereal.

"Oops," said Simon, crestfallen. "Sorry, Mars."

"Don't worry about it," Marshall reassured him. "She always does it, I guess it's a Ladies thing? Syndi told me they colour-code the glitter so they can warn people of incoming danger without tipping off anyone who might be intercepting their post."

"Oh," said Simon, scooping up drifts of milk-sodden paper hearts with his spoon. "So, what does gold, pink and a similar but subtly different shade of pink mean?"

Marshall stood up so fast his chair toppled backwards behind him.

"We need to get dressed and head into town right away," he said, staring at the wet glitter. "Depending on what shade of pink this was before it got soaked, either there is a Goblin Market snatching kids, or Syndi's pregnant and wants us to be at her baby shower."

Simon stood too, pulling his coat from the back of his chair.

"Either way," he said. "It looks like you and I are headed to Bed, Bath and Beyond."

Marshall nodded.
