JENNY HANNIVER

Simon laid a freshly laundered towel over his operating table and gently lifted the Jenny Haniver onto it. The thin membrane of salt-dried skin was papery to the touch, and the harsh overhead light shone through it and lit his gloved fingers beneath.

"I don't know if this will work," he warned it, setting it down and pinning the wings in place. The Jenny Haniver merely stared at him with empty eye-sockets, weeping a continuous trickle of sand.

Simon nodded, slowly.

Slipping his surgical mask into place, he picked up the syringe of cod liver oil and prepared for rehydration.
