Written for Day 19 of the
31daysoffandom challenge. The prompt I used for this was "full moon"
There was milk, yoghurt, and cottage cheese all over the road. Marshall Teller picked his way carefully through the lactose-laden carnage, keeping his eyes averted from the lumpy smear of pale pink residue that marked where blood splatter and dairy had mixed before curdling. Simon followed in his wake, grimacing at the clammy coldness of spilled ice-cream seeping through the toes of his worn out Sky Monsters.
It was hardly the first time death and dairy had combined in this town, a swirl of flavours that nobody had wanted but many had sampled, but it was the first incident Marshall could remember that hadn’t involved a milk truck on its side, wheels spinning while the scene inside the rear windows flickered madly before fading out.
The Eerie Fire Department were out in full force, helping to clear those milk cartons that had survived the impact from the road and sidewalks. Having only one engine, and therefore one extending ladder, meant that retrieving the flash-frozen citizens from the trees and telegraph poles where they had been flung on impact would take a while. The men and women of Eerie’s hard-working emergency services would require vast quantities of tea and coffee to keep them warm while they worked, and any cost-cutting on the part of a government-funded service was always welcome.
A groaning ice-cream salesman, his novelty sundae-shaped hat now bent and crumpled into a tricoloured twist that was more Picasso than Neapolitan, was being bundled into the back of an Eerie PD cruiser by a stony-faced Sergeant Knight and a weeping Officer Derek. Sergeant Knight was reciting a long list of violations with his usual lack of affect, and it was one of these many crimes that attracted Marshall’s attention.
“Did he just say ‘making ice-cream during a full moon’?” he whispered to Simon. Simon looked up at him, a thick milk moustache coating his upper lip and his eyes full of bafflement.
“Mars,” he said, slowly and carefully. “Everyone knows you don’t make ice-cream during a full moon.”
