I like to think he had a crisis of conscience - like, he doesn't know what the harvest king lottery entails, but he can glean from the overheard conversation with radford chisel and chaney that it's not a good thing. So he chucks mars under the bus, but then has second thoughts and tried to figure out exactly what is involved, and when he realises it's (reading between the lines) deadly, he comes back to rescue him.
I think that's just Simon being aware of how deadly Eerie can be. Like, he's always pleasantly surprised when his best friend doesn't get killed, but he also knows that Marshall dying doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't get to see each other again, or even continue to handle out regularly
