Her head was a moon-pale ghost pumpkin, and in the gloom of that early October evening it seemed to glow with a faint and flickering light all it's own.

Her clothes were rags of indeterminate colour, her body a haphazard assemble of salvaged planks and scavenged branches, and they blended into the dark so that only the white obloid of her face was visible.

Marshall Teller, Eerie's latest, last, and perhaps soon-to-be late Harvest King, stood unsteadily upon the uneven ground of the furrowed field, the soil hardened by an early frost, and she smiled her jagged smile upon him.

The corn maze towered above them, the entrance dark and shadowed and lorded over by a great scarecrow who seemed sometimes to have too many limbs and always to have too many teeth.

"Looks good, right boys?" Edgar enthused.

Marshall and Simon considered. The scarecrow, perhaps moved by some stray gust of wind, turned it's sagging and sackcloth face towards them and smiled a wide and nicotine-yellow smile.

"Great," said Marshall.

"Great," echoed Simon.

Syndi, resplendent in autumn colours and her hair teased into the consistency of straw beneath a broad-brimmed hat, scoffed.

"Still scared of the Wizard of Oz?"

The air smelled of autumn, of fresh-fallen leaves and a thin skein of ice on the puddles when you first woke up, fields stripped dark and bare after the harvest and sugar and cinnamon cooked a dozen ways in a dozen kitchens.

Mister Radford unfurled lengths of bunting in fiery reds and oranges and swept last winter's spiders out of the old straw-woven cornucopia. He polished the tombola drum to a high sheen and set up the little makeshift stage at the back of the store.

And then he waited, for the phonecall and the choosing of the Harvest King.

Out in the cornfields, the wolves were howling. Marshall's skin prickled, fur rising beneath human flesh, and he forced it down again. Behind the counter Mister Radford gave him a sympathetic look, sliding a couple of barely-grilled hamburger patties onto a plate before passing it to him.

Two seats down, Elvis stopped crooning to himself long enough to shoot Marshall a suspicious look, before tossing down a wad of twenties and beating a hasty retreat. Outside, a familiar-looking husky observed through the storefront window, tongue lolling, expression smug.

"Moon's loud tonight," Radford commented.

Marshall nodded, lips tight over long teeth.

If you want to ensure good luck, low taxes, and a high yield crop, better slap a goofy looking hat on the nearest male over 13, and pretend they were headed for a Spanish vacation come the harvest. It's time to buy a ticket for the Eerie, Indiana Harvest King lottery and wait for the Eerie Wolf to make an appearance.

Syndi held out both hands, palm-up. In each sat a mid-sized fascinator, glorious in seasonally-appropriate shades of orange, red and gold.

Marshall made a face.

"Un-aerodynamically fat robin or small pumpkin with mange," he said. "Neither of them is really a great look."

Syndi sighed in agreement.

"What else have you got?" asked Simon, pulling the large plastic tub across the kitchen table towards him.

"I dunno," said Syndi. "Some plastic acorns with most of the gold paint rubbed off them. A full set of felt mushrooms, for some reason. Stuff like that."

"Have you got any glue?" asked Simon.

Not gonna lie, guys; this is easily one of my top five. I still get really happy when I see Stephen Root in anything, purely because seeing him makes me think of this episode. Without further delay, prepare yourself for the amazing awesomeness of... Mr. Chaney!

I've been scheduling prompt/challenge posts all evening, so apologies if you saw a few posts appearing and then vanishing again a few seconds later - I kept forgetting to put in future dates, because occasionally I am a numpty.

Anyway, here's a rough guide to upcoming prompt/challenge posts on the comm:

A weekly random prompt post, to go live on Sundays, which... could be anything.

A full moon prompt post, to go live, well, the night of a full moon.

A creature feature prompt post, to go live on the 7th of each month, each one themed around a particular type of movie monster.

A fairytales prompt post, to go live on the 21st of each month, with a particular fairytale as it's theme.

A solstice prompt post, to go live the night of the summer and winter solstice. The clue to it's theme is in the name.

An equinox prompt post, to go live the night of the spring and autumnal equinox. Works like the solstice prompt, only in March and September.

All of these challenges are permanently open once posted, and do not have a post-on or post-by date. You wanna write midwinter solstice fic in July, or get the urge to make art for an old monster prompt from six moths ago? Go for it. Once it's ready, post it up and share your awesomeness with the world.

Holiday themed challenges work a bit differently - these will go up before the holiday in question, and then you post your work on the actual day of the holiday. Holidays scheduled so far are:

Halloween (goes live 1st October, posting date 31st October)
Thanksgiving (goes live 1st November, posting date 26th November)
Christmas (goes live 1st December, posting date 25th December)
Valentines (goes live 1st February, posting date 14th February)
Easter (goes live 1st March, posting date 3rd April)
4th of July (goes live 4th June, posting date 4th July)

Sadly, this year we are only 5 days away from the Harvest Festival, so there wasn't time to get a proper challenge started, but it's Sunday 27th September this year, and next year, the prompt post will go live on September 1st and the posting date will be September 25th.

Also, prompt ideas. Stuff you'd like to see as prompts. Let me know and I'll use them for the weekly ones, or start up one of your own. Or, if you have a prompt you want filling, head on over to the Better Weird Than Dead Fic Fest and request it! May e fill a few requests while you're there - theres a bunch of really awesome prompts hiding in the commentd that are just looking to take root in your brainmeats.

With the equinox and the harvest moon coming up, and Halloween not long after, who would be interested in a monthly prompt post, to go live the day of a full moon, and basically just remind us all to look at that awesome glowing ball in the sky and write fic about werewolves, or moonrabbits, or the tides, or anything that you think of when the moon is round?

Also, less frequently, a quarterly post to mark the solstice and equinox and generate some fanworks and general excitement around that aswell?

Hey guys, don't forget that the Autumnal Equinox takes place this Wednesday, 23rd September, and the Harvest Moon is a week tomorrow, September 28th. Eerie's not due a Harvest King sacrifice til 2018, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be suspicious if the townsfolk challenge you this a threshing contest out in the corn field next Sunday.
