Eerie, Indiana fanfiction: Drive In

Written for the fffc October challenge. The prompt was "creature: classic/mythological"



It wasn't the first time that a creature from a black and white monster movie had escaped into the real world from the confines of it's celluloid prison. It was just that, last time, it had been a past-his-prime stage actor with a full bladder and a strong sense of self-worth. This time, it was Count Orlok, and he was fifty feet tall as a result of stepping out of a drive-in movie screen rather than the television in Marshall's living room.

"Are you sure Harley wasn't at the screening?" Marshall asked, shouting to be heard above the screams of women in nighties. "He didn't bite the film canister or the projectionist or something?"

Simon shook his head.

"I can't always keep track of who he bites or when, but I dropped him off at his elementary school disco before I came over and it's not due to let out until eight."

A cacophonous rustling of dry popcorn flakes rasping against each other made the boys turn. Poplio, in all his yellow-white malevolence, had emerged from the Eerieplex to see what was going on.

"You!" said Marshall accusingly. "You did this! You couldn't stand to see anyone watching a movie without having their sanity shredded by an eldritch presence from outside human perception!"

Poplio shrugged, an avalanche of artificial butter flavourings and unexploded kernels. He watched Orlok stub his giant one-dimensional toe on the cornerstone of Eerie Presbytarian and scream in a silent rage that nonetheless shattered the windows of every building for three miles. If an interdimensional being comprised mostly of eyes and corn and horror could be said to smirk, Poplio did.

He extended one nubbly tendril, which bulged and flexed at the tip, sinking in the centre as the edges rose to form a rough hollow. He dipped another, roughly hand-shaped tentacle into the makeshift bowl, pulling out a handful of white flakes that dripped with corn syrup. These he flung into a cavernous maw through which the dying stars of another universe were just visible behind concentric circles of slowly spinning teeth, and began to chew.
