For anyone who was a big fan of the show back in the day, it's now on Amazon Prime. For anyone who doesn't know what the show is about, it was a short lived series back in the early 90's about a normal family who moves to a town where lots of weird and terrifying things happen. It's more of a kid's show, but it's got some really fun stories and episodes and some fun homages to classic horror.

a. Eerie, Indiana - $20 on Amazon for the series - a BIG inspiration on many aspects of Gravity Falls, which will become immediately apparent as you watch it and throughout the series. Gnome biker, hobo with a mysterious past, hand iconography, secret mystical societies, and many other things I can't directly convey here because they're huge spoilers for BOTH series. It's also available a bit on Youtube (in AWFUL quality; avoid, honestly, if you haven't seen the show) and Secret Screenings has been talking a LOT about the series lately. Good starter video is here from the folks of The Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel: Secret Screenings: The History of Eerie, Indiana Probably the closest thing you can get to a 'pure Gravity Falls' fix that isn't GF itself right now.

Hi, TOMT. For years, I've been trying to find what I believe was some type of sci-fi movie or TV episode that I believe I saw as a kid sometime in the USA in the 1990s, but have never had any luck with Googling and the like. My memory is fuzzy and I'm surely misremembering details by now, and getting some things just completely wrong, but I'll try to describe the image in my head the best I can as a starting place.

The setting is some type of featureless void. A woman is walking through it, and comes upon an impish, perhaps not-entirely-human boy huddled over, eating a squirrel or a rat or something like that raw, with blood smeared on his mouth. They speak, and he invites her to play a game that I think he called "knack the atom," or "knock the atom," or something like that. He tells her that if she gets it wrong, the universe may be destroyed, and he hands her something like clear blocks or shapes with which to play the game.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm fairly certain that this was something I saw on TV, and wasn't a dream or the like. I wasn't creative enough to imagine something like this anyways, haha. Thanks in advance!

I'll check some episode descriptions for that, but I don't think this was from a show aimed at children. I could be wrong, though.

HerbertWest: Eerie Indiana was and is a really underrated show! I rewatched it recently, and it holds up, unlike a lot of other shows that old.

About ten years ago, I was on a search to watch as many of the scariest and strangest movies possible. One of the ones on my list was this really bizarre movie about a futuristic town populated by weird people. I think the movie focused on a particular family. It was almost Leave It To Beaver-esque but in this really weird setting. It was sort of a comedy, but felt like a horror. There were weird characters, weird food, and overall just very uncomfortable. It was likely a 1970's or 1980's movie. In color.

Anyone know?

Stranger Things reminded me a lot of "Eerie, Indiana." It's a kid's show from the early '90s and it was only on for one season, but it has a bit of a cult following. It's worth looking into, IMO. You can find episodes on YouTube, I think.

fiftyfadesofgrey: Hell yeah. Goosebumps as well even though it was on fox. Eerie Indiana was one too only one season. Some vaguely remember.

I remember seeing this on TV, probably in the mid or late 90s, though I'm not sure if it was an episode of a show or a movie (possibly even a made-for-TV movie).

It was more than just the housewives, if I recall correctly; it was whole families, each person with their own container (sort of like Tupperware coffins for suburban vampires, if that makes sense) but the wives were the ones selling them, I think.

_EVILLIVE_ It's a trip to see actors slightly older than me now as kids....there was a few cameos from people that I recognized like no shit that's freddy Rodriguez and nikki cox....I know there's more but those two I remember off the top of my head.

Captain_Roderick There was a young Toby Maguire, the voice of Panic (Disney Hercules), & I’m pretty sure the actual actor of Max Headroom is there as well as lots of people I know I recognized from countless small roles over the years. But, yea, lots of people. It was a trip.

ArugulaZ: There was an episode where a guy named "The Donald" hypnotized people with catchy TV commercials, made them buy useless crap on credit, then took their souls as collateral. I guess people should have been paying attention to Eerie Indiana, huh?

The Other Dimension only lasted 15.

I remember that that they retooled the show and added Jason Marsden as Dash X.

timrbrady: Well, I didn't have plans for tonight. My most vivid memory of watching this show was on a road trip I took to Florida with my family as a child. We had a black and white portable television that I watched in the back of the car. They played several episodes of this show while we were on the road. The black and white TV gave it a nice Twilight Zone feel.

Haven't seen it. Reading the premise, it vaguely makes me think of "Eerie Indiana".

I remember as a kid, Courage the Cowardly Dog really freaking me out but I love that creepy, dream like, surreal stuff. Any movie or TV recommendations that are similar?

Maybe Eerie Indiana if you can find it. It was an early 90's show directed at teens that was kind of Kiddie Twin Peaks. I remember really liking it back then.

unrealitykarl: Dash-X, for those who don't know, is a character from EERIE INDIANA played by Jason Marsden. He was introduced in an episode starring Ray Walston as an Alien who was brainwashing the good folk of Eerie into repairing his teleporter so he could go home. Dash-X was also an alien, brought to earth as a baby, who didn't know that he was an alien. I love Eerie. Where did you see it?

missmediajunkie: I saw the reruns on FOX Kids around 1997. Thank you so much for answering this. I loved that show when I was a kid.

I rewatched this a couple of months ago. It still holds up. I have fond memories of watching it (and Alex Mack, California Dreams, Saved by the Bell, Sister, Sister and Bug Juice) during the summer holidays when I was a kid.

This is the first show I can remember sitting down with my family to watch every week. It was kind of for kids but adults could really enjoy it as well. I was really disappointed it didn't last longer, though with the time-distortion of my kid brain I would have sworn it went for at least 2 seasons.

One of the creators of this show made another quirky one-season show a few years later called Strange Luck, which was also one of my family's favorites. I think it aired before or after the X-Files. That one really seems to have been lost to time, though. I don't think it's ever shown up on any streaming services or anything.

Anyone else remember when they re-aired the show in the mid 90s on Fox Kids Saturday mornings? I had no idea the episodes were several years older. I still have all the books that came out alongside the "relaunch" of the show. This one DEFINITELY needs a reboot. Great show for kids but plenty for adults.

Side note, does anyone have a memory of a scene where Simon answers his door and the person asks if his parents are home. You hear the sound effects of bed springs creaking and he says "I think they're busy right now". Did I just completely make this up?

Picked up the dvds on Amazon. They just don’t make shows like that anymore. If you haven’t watched either of these ...trust me...you should.

What are all the SCPs located and/or discovered, in whole or in part, in the state of Indiana? Is it really that common, or even a downright cliche?

I don't have a lot of information about this but hopefully someone can help. I once saw a promo ad for a show about a town that was so perfect it was downright creepy, possibly along the lines of the Stepford Wives. The only part of the ad that I remember clearly was that it showed a line of houses each with a man on a riding lawn mower and all the men are mowing their respective lawns while in perfect synchronization with the other men.

The theme song is a creepy version of the Indiana State song, and for some odd reason there are palm trees in the opening (around the 1:00 mark).

I just learned about this a couple weeks ago and mainlined the whole thing on Amazon Prime. It's basically like The X-Files For Kids, really charming and fun.

First episode of Eerie Indiana - the cult single-season TV show that inspired Gravity Falls and Stranger Things (1991)

I'm guessing it was airing about 15 years ago but I wouldn't be surprised if it was much older or newer than that. It was probably a Canadian show. I don't have any evidence for that except that I'm Canadian and a lot of the really weird cartoons I saw growing up were from here.

I only remember one episode, where individual people keep getting stuck in loops a couple seconds long. For example, one of the main characters was buying something from (I think) the school cafeteria, and pays in cash. The person at the register says "here's your change" and hands some money back, but gets caught in one of these loops. Immediately after handing over the money, they say "here's your change" again and hands over even more. This keeps going until the main character's friend drags them away, scolding them for taking advantage of this weird thing going on.

Every episode it was a different paranormal thing, and if I remember correctly it never effected the main characters? But I'm unsure about that.

Any ideas?

I’m in the United States, however I’m nervous to disclose the state narrowing a search to find me. If unwarranted I can disclose the state.

I was the recipient of a kidney and I declined to ever know who gave it to me and I also noted that I didn’t want any kind of messages from the family. I appreciate the kidney but am not religious and believe everyone should be a donor and it shouldn’t be such a big deal.

Last year the family of the donor pretty much showed up at my doorstep.

They honestly aren’t doing anything that I would call “harassment” just occasional texts (I never gave them my number) inviting me to holidays and some emails with the mother really wanting to spend time with me because part of her daughter is inside me. I politely decline and reinstate my personal beliefs or ignore (depending on the day)

What I would like to know is if I have any legal recourse in how the private detective got this information. And I am curious if it is possible to force them to stop communicating with me.

I guess on one weird level the idea behind it is kind of sweet but on multiple other levels it's creepy. I mean, it's a kidney.

This isn't like it's a Hallmark/Disney movie or that one episode of Eerie Indiana. It wasn't a heart. It's a kidney. People can live with one kidney.

A kidney is just a weird organ to fixate on. Is the original donor alive? If not, is this some sort of creepy grieving thing?

Was such a great show! Bought it on DVD a decade ago and still watch it here and there.

So, our kids, boy 6 and girl 8, are BEGGING literally daily for a scary movie. They swear they are ready for it. We've shown them poltergeist and sleepy hollow and they did fine. They keep requesting to watch the remake of IT, but I'm not sure about that one.

When I think about it, it was watching horror movies as a kid when I developed my love of the genre. Movies as a kid scared me in a way that I still chase to this day. The Shining at age 10 did me, and is still one of my all time favorite films and books. So, I want them to get to enjoy the feeling of being truly scared by a movie, but I don't want to traumatize them (at least not permanently).

I want to avoid anything extreme, and any film with too much intense gore (blood is fine, just nothing crazy) or sexual violence is out, of course.

Examples of movies I think are too much: Sinister, IT, Hereditary, Evil Dead remake, etc

What would you recommend? Help me scare these kiddos good for their first time.

LakmeBun: Maybe the ones with critters in them, like not too realistic ones eg. Gremlins. There's also more kid friendly tv shows (and books!) Goosebumps, Are you afraid of the dark, Eerie Indiana... I think those might be better suited for them than straight up horror at that age.

Willwebbful: In the lead up to Halloween, I've watched and reviewed every episode in the first series of Goosebumps. It's not as good as I remembered.

I wanted to give these a shout-out bc I haven't seen them recced on other "what do I listen to now that I'm caught up on TMA?" posts. They are very different in plot (from tma and each other), but there are multiple episodes in both that feel aligned with different entities. Plus Eskew has a male British narrator with a soothing voice, so it has that in common with tma 😂. I haven't finished either, but I'm enjoying them so far!

SAYER is sci-fi narrated by a sinister AI showing you around a corporate-owned space station / satellite. I am in Eskew consists of dispatches from a surreal and vaguely nightmarish city.

I love I am in Eskew and it has moments reminiscent of TMA but it's very much it's own thing. It's more surreal horror than spooky horror, but the quality of writing is consistent and high. It also has a second narrator later on, and she provides a very refreshing contrasting storyline that actually helps the pacing of the work as a whole. Very, very, very good. More Eerie, Indiana for grown-ups than Magnus, but definitely worth a listen.

Just hire King to write a TV series called "Maine: it's kind of fucked up." have it on Hulu or Netflix, and just show all the weird shit that tends to happen in Maine.

Basically an adult version of Eerie, Indiana.

Hi fellow loopers! I thought I would share this scenario generator that I’ve been working on. It’s full of aspects pulled from various sources (Gravity Falls; Eerie, Indiana; The X-Files; The Twilight Zone; etc.) and is designed to help you come up with stories (either planned or on the fly). Roll 2d6 on each of the five main tables, using one number for the row and the other for the column, writing down the results for each. If you roll a result in all-caps, consult the appropriate table to fill in that blank. Once you have the five aspects, try to create a story with at least three of those elements.

Example:

Antagonist: Drifter (6-3)
Power: Paralysis (3-4)
Device: APPLIANCE (3,1) > Fridge (2)
Goal: Fame (5-2)
Intro: Hiding
The PCs find a car that’s crashed into a tree. The driver is nearby, hiding in a bush. He says that he’s hiding from a hitchhiker he picked up who did something to paralyze him (hence the crash). The hitchhiker told the driver his name and that he should spread the word about him.

I hope you find this helpful (or at least amusing). I’ve used it to create a scenario that I’ve just started running and it’s been going well so far! Let me know if you have any comments or questions!

The first thing that caught the interest of me and my brother was its ability to capture the essence of the era it takes place in, not only in set, characters and costume design, but even the way the show is filmed and its use of synth soundtracks and what not. peacedetski: You know it's bad when half of the photos in the "Historic Places" section on Wikipedia show buildings in various states of abandonment and disrepair.

peacedetski: What's most eerie in the photos and videos of that place, and different from most other urban decay I've seen, is how there don't seem to be some alive places and some dead ones, but rather everything is slowly decaying and falling apart - every occupied house is next to a crumbling one, every parking lot is empty save for a couple cars, etc.

Incidentally, Eerie Indiana is a massively underrated show
